This year, I am thrilled to be part of a meaningful conversation at the IMO's event celebrating the International Day for Women in Maritime, Highlighted by Arsenio Dominguez in the video below. This year's theme, "Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety," gives us the perfect platform to discuss blending human needs with technology, enhancing training, and boosting seafarer well-being. The symposium will take place on 17 May. 🔥 Fireside Chat: A Holistic Approach to Safety at Sea: I'm thrilled to join Dr. Momoko Kitada, Head of Maritime Education & Training at the World Maritime University. Momoko leads WMU’s collaboration efforts with the IMO in terms of women’s integration in the maritime sector, and actively incorporates gender perspectives in her interdisciplinary teaching in maritime subjects. In our chat, I'll draw from my journey as a seafarer, research projects such as OCEAN Navigation Awareness, my collaborative work in human-centered design and human factors, and my experience leading a team of designers in developing maritime technology. We're aiming for a deep and engaging conversation that challenges the status quo and drives us towards Maritime 5.0: a truly human-centered, resilient, and sustainable industry. The Netherlands is proud to host the Shaping Feminist Foreign Policy Conference 2023 on November 1-2, a testament to our commitment to advancing feminist foreign policy. The principle of equality is firmly rooted in article 1 of our Dutch constitution. In view of this article and of article 90 of the constitution (on promoting the development of the international legal order), the government has opted for a foreign policy that addresses the systemic inequalities experienced by especially women and minorities such as LGBTIQ+ people. A feminist foreign policy, in other words. The Netherlands is thereby part of an international group of pioneering countries that are pursuing a feminist foreign policy. The Dutch variant of FFP revolves around the "4R" strategy: 1. Rights: We strive to ensure that women and LGBTIQ+ individuals across the globe can claim their universal rights and live free from violence. 2. Representation: We are dedicated to their meaningful participation in political decisions, amplifying their voices on the global stage. 3. Resources: We recognize the necessity of having resources to achieve these goals, fostering sustainable progress. 4. Reality Check: We acknowledge that conditions differ worldwide, and tailor our policy goals to suit local contexts. The election of the first woman president in my country, North Macedonia, marks a significant moment not only for the country but for women worldwide. It's a testament to the tireless efforts of women breaking through barriers and challenging traditional norms. This milestone underscores the importance of recognizing and harnessing the power of women in leadership roles, not just for representation but for the invaluable contributions they bring to governance, diplomacy, and societal progress. The first day at the Shaping Feminist Foreign Policy Conference in The Hague was full of power, inspiration, and at times emotions and feelings of anger about all current crises happening in the world. The day kicked-off with very powerful perspectives on Women, Peace, and Security. 💪🏽 Madina Mahboobi questioned the fragility of the WPS agenda despite global investments, emphasizing the need for sustained political will. Let's move beyond symbolic gestures during elections and recognize women as key actors in decision-making processes and not just as victims. 💪🏽maria al abdeh urged a feminist approach to justice, emphasizing the importance of women in decision-making roles, not just on panels. She urged a feminist perspective that confronts violence with justice, not more violence. True change comes when women lead. 💪🏽 Natalia Karbowska reminded us that letting dictatorships triumph in one country sets a dangerous precedent worldwide. Amplifying the voices of women becomes crucial in preventing this, but there's often reluctance to provide resources to local women-led movements. It's time to overcome this fear and empower those without a voice. Alongside the insightful plenary sessions, I enjoyed a thematic session on breaking down barriers through economic empowerment, organized by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Despite the great examples shared, one of the pertinent questions arising is whether economic empowerment transforms existing social norms and values hindering women's full engagement in society. Can this change occur organically with financial independence or does it require more focused efforts? The last thematic session of the day was about the need for feminist funding, organised by International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN). Esther Omam's passionate plea urges a paradigm shift, emphasizing the need to prioritize local women-led organizations at the forefront of conflicts. France Bognon advocates for an "appetite for trust" in these frontrunners, emphasizing the importance of recognizing their pivotal role. Abir Haj Ibrahim highlights the careful selection process undertaken by local organizations, calling for mutual pride and acknowledgment. Mossarat Qadim underscores the importance of funding organizations over projects, citing the necessity of institutional support for sustained capacity and flexible emergency response. A day full of inspiring keynotes, panel discussions and networking opportunities - Female Future Festival.    Here are some key takeaways from this very special event: 🔥 Sometimes you have to break out of the adult way of thinking and look for the creativity of your inner child. This will support to overcome barriers and linear thinking.   🔥 Leadership is genuine human relationship. A good leader likes people genuinely. So simple, but so important to keep in mind. To use the Austrian words of the speaker: "I mog Leit!" 🔥 Life is like Mario Kart and offers many different levels - level up and push yourself to the next level. Each level brings new challenges.   🔥 Fix the system, not the woman. Equality matters to both, men and women. As long as the issue is primarily driven by women, progress will be slow.  🔥 No matter which path we take, there will always be someone who takes the road after us. Therefore, always design your path in such a way that you can be a role model for yourself and those who follow. 🔥 Last but not least, be grateful to yourself. The recent #UNGA78 suggested that women's representation at the United Nations hasn't improved as much as many might think... Of the 78 presidents elected since 1946, only four have been women. And there has never been a woman UN Secretary-General. As current UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, "One look around this room shows not enough has changed. 'We the people' does not mean 'we the men'." GWL Voices for Change and Inclusion — an advocacy group set up by Irina Bokova, a former director general of UNESCO, Helen Clark, the former prime minister of New Zealand, and Susana Malcorra, who was chief of staff to Ban Ki-moon as UN Secretary-General — is also insistent that the UN must elect its first female Secretary-General at the next vote in 2026. In honour of International Women's Day, The Hague Humanity Hub hosted their Democracy drinks events under the theme ‘Investing in Women, Investing in Democracy’. I had the pleasure of attending this event which was hosted in collaboration with WIIS Netherlands . The panel was moderated by Fleur de Braaf and had speakers, Commander Ella van den Heuvel and Sabra Bano who shared their insights into the ways in which investment in women is achieved, how investment in women has changed over the course of their careers and how we urgently need to ensure that the representation of women is accomplished across all platforms! Following the annual World Bank report, a recent article published by the guardian outlined that there is in fact: “No equality for working women in any country in the world” - Kaamil Ahmed Whilst reform in legislation has aided in equality for women, their is still a call for structural changes to ensure implementation of these laws leads to tangible impact. #womenindemcracy #defenddemocracy #equality
