5 years. 5 years is both forever and no time at all. Here at Brave Like Gabe we have the honor and joy of talking about Gabe every single day. We get to hear from people she’s inspired and do our very best to live up to the legacy she created. Yet, Gabe should be here with us, enjoying summer in Minnesota and planning the 7th annual Brave Like Gabe 5K. And in a sense, she still is. The power of her voice lives on in so many of us and her hope for more research is realized daily here at Brave Like Gabe. These past five years have been eventful, notably highlighted by over $2 Million in rare cancer research funding by Brave Like Gabe. What an incredible impact she continues to have, thanks in part to all of you. “I would love to live in a world where rare cancer patients have more treatment options and ultimately, cures. And if I can’t live in that world, I want to help it become a possibility for future patients.” Gabe, you are deeply missed every single day.

June is National Cancer Survivors Month. There are currently more than 18 million people living with a history of cancer in the United States. Each person diagnosed with cancer faces a unique set of challenges, but one in four survivors reports a poor physical quality of life and one in 10 reports poor mental health-related quality of life. Together, we can do better. Has cancer affected your life? I have personally experienced the gut-wrenching moment of being told, "You have cancer." And it's claimed the lives of my father and father-in-law because it went undetected until it was too late to save them. It also tried to take my mother, brother, sister-in-law, and even daughter. Too often, we don't know we have this insidious disease until it is too late to treat it effectively. The good news is that significant strides have been made in early cancer detection. One remarkable advancement is the #GalleriTest by GRAIL, a test capable of screening for over 50 types of cancer. In light of our family histories, Jean and I both opted for this simple blood test, a crucial step in identifying cancer before it becomes a formidable foe. I am passionate about spreading awareness of this breakthrough test and technology. It has the potential to save lives, and I want to do my part in making it known to those who might benefit from it.

1moWhat an incredible photo! It’s hard to believe 5 years have passed, Gabe is still so vivid in my mind. I had the pleasure of knowing her from the very beginning of her journey, a journey that lives on though the BLG Foundation. I like to think Gabe and Abby are putting in miles together each week. ❤️❤️
