At 5am, I saw a man with no left leg and crutches tackling the challenging 2.5-mile hike on a hot summer morning. Despite the difficulty, he was determined to reach the top. This experience made me reflect on the importance of mindset and willpower in overcoming obstacles. When it comes to hiring, do we prioritize skills or the will to succeed? While skills are essential, it’s the willingness to face challenges and do the hard things that truly drive success. Hiring individuals with the right attitude, who are eager to learn, grow, and embrace discomfort, can make all the difference in building a winning team. There's a piece of career advice out there that I've never liked. It goes something like this: If you're offered the chance to join a rocketship company, you shouldn't stress about the role you're offered. But this metaphor misses the mark. It paints employees as passive travelers, when in reality, you're expected to be an active participant in the company's growth. To contribute at a high level, your role, who you report to, and who reports to you are all critical. They determine how well you can use your skills and experience to influence the company's direction. This isn't to say you should obsess over your job title. But it's perfectly reasonable to care about the nature of your role, especially if you're part of a company that's taking off.
