The tournament director, Jo-Annie Charbonneau, shared insights on how they successfully raised $1.5 million CAD to bring the event to life. Today, the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) oversees national associations in 107 countries, with an estimated 10 million players worldwide. Trademarks mean you’ll not see the word Frisbee used officially - toy company Wham-O bought the rights from Morrison in 1957 before subtly altering the spelling - but flying disc disciplines include disc golf, freestyle, and ultimate. WFDF is an International Federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee – IOC and by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), and the FISU - International University Sports Federation (FISU), the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF), the International World Games Association (IWGA), the International Masters Games Association (IMGA), and the TAFISA - The Association For International Sport for All. This is the sort of new sport for the 18-34 audience that the IOC have been monitoring. 2023 has been a bumper year for BSA and blind sports across Australia. Here’s a snapshot of this major development: 1️⃣ Explosive Growth: Pickleball, an exhilarating amalgamation of ping pong, tennis, and badminton, is the fastest-growing sport in the US. Witnessing more than 37 million players, it's now taking Australia by storm. Under the banner of Pacific Pickleball, co-founded by Adam Thompson and myself, and in partnership with Pickleball Australia Association Limited, we are Australia's official professional league. 2️⃣ Major League Move: In collaboration with Major League Pickleball, we're set to pioneer an era of professional pickleball in the region by forming Major League Pickleball Australia (MLP Australia). A massive congratulations to the entire MLP team and DUPR for all they have done to elevate the sport globally. 3️⃣ The Road Ahead: Emulating MLP’s coveted team format, the action began this weekend in Brisbane and will spread its wings to Melbourne and Sydney, with a prize pool surpassing $200,000 by end of year. By 2024, we anticipate a staggering $700,000 prize pool, signifying the sport's burgeoning sponsorship and appeal.
