Excellent article! Is the extra money schools receive from conference realignment really worth a life of mediocrity? I often think of my favorite team, the University of Miami. In the Big East The U was winning national championships, in the ACC, they haven’t been relevant in 20 years. I don’t buy the argument that one league is/was necessarily better than the other, because regardless of conference strength, Miami was still winning national championships in the Big East, same can be said for Big East Basketball programs when they left the conference. In the Big East they were winning NCAA Tournaments. UConn returned to the Big East last season and quickly returned to its winning ways. It is my belief that realignment kills athletic programs because the programs lose their natural rivalries, they lose their monopoly on traditional recruiting ground, the fanbase suffers because of the loss of regional connections, and in total the team loses their identity. Sure, people can point to increased revenue and donations and say that isn’t necessarily true either, however, it’s not from the loss of the higher end diehards who will always be there, it’s the loss of the casual to mid level fan who appreciated the more localized, regional and amateur aspect of the sport. The people who supported the local school because doing so gave them a sense of pride in their community. The people who used to pack the stadium because they could afford to 2-3 time a year and they refused to allow the other regional school to have more fans in the stands at your home game. This local connection matters to people. People from Syracuse for instance don’t care about 90% of the schools in the ACC. Sure it’s cool to play Duke every couple years at MSG, but otherwise the two programs and local fanbases really have nothing in common. Syracuse fans cared about Georgetown, Villanova, West Virginia, Pitt and St. John’s. In football they cared about Miami because that’s really the only place people from Upstate NY dreamed of traveling in the winter months. They also cared about Pitt, Penn State, Boston College and West Virginia…local schools that they connect with. I for one miss the old Big East. I miss the dominance of the University of Miami football. I miss going to the Carrier Dome and seeing talents like Michael Vick and Allen Iverson come to town and play against team with players like McNabb and Harrision or on the court with Moten or Wallace. Bowling over the Break for Sports Business Students. Students are on break. But this is still a great time to assign a little thought provoking work to keep the Sports Business brain ticking over. The sports-rich window of the holidays, the time from late December through early January, are an interesting case study in aligning your brand with a sporting event. The Dukes Mayo Bowl and the Pop-Tarts Bowl have created quite the buzz and viral moments. One featured a bath in the title sponsor's product for the winning coach and the other created an amazing moment with a mascot portraying the fun, breakfast treat. These Bowl Games bring top college football programs together for a tasty match up during this festive time. These Bowl Games are not crowning National Champions. These match-ups are not deciding the best team in the land. So, why do these games exist? What brings sponsors on board? Even deeper than simply sponsoring, what drives a sponsoring brand to work to create a viral moment? What can be gained from this as a sponsor? Are there long term benefits? What do the schools gain from participation? Having students do some research into a bowl game or two will help uncover more and more of the opportunities in Sports Business. It will help them continue to look past the shiny wrapping paper and dig into what is inside and how it works. Florida State University is exploring an equity investment from JP Morgan, which would be a first in college athletics. The structure is complicated, but essentially FSU creates a separate commercial entity that would take private investment in exchange for future sponsorship and media revenue. NIL has opened the door for college athletics to openly lean into becoming full-fledged money-generating businesses. College sports will look completely different in the next ten years. Expect to see potential unionization of players, restructuring of athletic depts with new roles akin to business organizations, even bigger contracts for coaches, huge investments in facilities, and major NIL deals. And one more thing - the introduction of the Chief Brand Officer for Athletics, both at the school and conference level. The future of one of Manatee County's largest and most prominent private employers — IMG Academy — coming off its blockbuster $1.25 billion sale is one part digital, one part physical. That's a big takeaway from a rare glimpse into leadership's thinking at the sports academy and school with a global roster of superstars in multiple sports who have trained there. IMG Academy President Brent Richard spoke about the April 25 acquisition and the future of IMG at an Association for Corporate Growth event Oct. 5. I have the receipts 🧾! I’ve been in favor of this concept for a long time… Instead of pretending college athletics is not a business maybe we should just embrace it… Since football & basketball provide & encourage the vast majority of two things: ✔️Money for other sports ✔️Non-athlete college applications- (look to Tennessee’s application spike after their football resurgence and just wait for Colorado’s with what Coach Prime is doing.) People are worried & talk about: ✔️conference realignment ✔️Schools being left behind ✔️bowl games being diminished ✔️revenue sharing ✔️how revenue sharing effects all sports ✔️loss of historic rivals And more… Done the right way the promotion-relegation model solves A LOT of those problems & provide so much revenue to college sports, Power 4 (because let’s be honest, that’s what it is now) AND mid-majors. Does this idea make sense? I have been advocating for a super conference to support football. Don't harm the balance of collegiate athletics. 1) It keeps non-revenue sports competing in a regional space. 2) It separates pay-for-play from REAL NIL 3) It creates a new revenue model to support every college athlete.
