Andrew MacAskill research suggests those who appear "too keen" for a job are less likely to be offered the role. This seems to almost mirror Rory Sutherland's book "Alchemy- The surprising power of ideas that don't make sense". Are recruiters now reverting to pre Covid thoughts of being less tolerant of career breaks? Are hiring managers becoming even more risk adverse with a very narrow perceived requirement for someone coming from an identical role in an identical company (without questioning why they would do that other than money). As a #csuite jobseeker it helps to have a personal brand. Perception is important. There needs to be value scarcity. We need to demonstrate we can solve pain points. We need to communicate stories. All points that Rory Sutherland I am sure would advocate. Some form part of Johnny Walker Exec career coaching programme. However perhaps what's missing from someone between job's is Mark Manson's "The subtle art of not giving a f*ck". Re-balance a little. Focus more on authenticity than appeal, what truly matters and acceptance of limitations? I would suggest there is a difference though on keenness/desperation and passion. The structure of the #interview may not allow perhaps for spontaneity and problem solving and too much on justification and context. I've spent the last two months helping people find a job after being laid off. We had a few calls, I reviewed their CVs and portfolios and helped the best I could with the emotional journey that comes from such an experience. I've gathered some tips while helping them that I'd like to share with all of you: 1️⃣ Keep your CV concise: Hiring managers and recruiters have limited time, so highlight your key achievements with 3 bullet points per position, keeping them two lines max. 2️⃣ Showcase your Expertise and Competence: Create a list that helps recruiters match your skills to the role's requirements. 3️⃣ Confidentiality matters: Even if you're under an NDA, you can mention the brands you've worked with in your application. Your work experience should be shareable while maintaining confidentiality. 4️⃣ Let your work shine: Your showreel is the perfect opportunity to let your work speak for itself. No need for a complex script, focus on showcasing your projects. 5️⃣ Master the art of interview preparation: Instead of trying to prepare for every question, focus on the major 5 case scenarios from your past experience. Use the Situation-Task-Action-Result method to structure your responses and adapt them to different question angles. 6️⃣ Salary negotiations are hard! My recommendation: Determine the salary you need to achieve your desired lifestyle and negotiate confidently. If they see you as the right fit, they'll do their best to accommodate your expectations within their budget. 7️⃣ Networking is Key! Don't underestimate the power of networking in your job search journey: Utilize LinkedIn, reconnect with your existing network, or attend to industry events. 8️⃣ There is a world of opportunities outside LinkedIn: Expand your search with tools like wellfound, remoteok, justremote, powertofly, or working nomads. 💼 I hope these tips can give you the edge in today's competitive job market.
