In A Just Future, I underscore the fact that college faculty play an enormous role determining the academic success of historically marginalized students who may struggle at elite institutions. There are plenty of ways faculty have learned to improve their teaching, through inclusive pedagogy, for instance. But let's not overlook the valuable role of mentorship, a more fraught enterprise now that our increasingly diverse student body looks different than our faculty body. The Assessment and Feedback Principles and Priorities were approved for implementation in August 2022, and since then Schools The University of Edinburgh have been challenged to update their assessment strategies in multiple ways. Dr Emily Taylor describes how colleagues are supporting this activity in the largest college in the university:  Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS). This is based on three key implementation approaches: 1. Unethical behavior is common within the ranks of institutional leadership. HOWEVER, that does not mean that all university administrators are unethical, nor does it mean that they uphold beliefs established by prior administrators that serve to perpetuate systemic injustices. At the same time, many administrators do not know how they can advocate for the local community and support student organizers from within the hierarchal framework of their institution. My conversations with the latter sort of administrators at the University of Pennsylvania— those who believe strongly in social justice but don't know how to best go about it—are what inspired me to create this guide. "Prioritizing Humanity: An Administrative Guide to Supporting Student Activists" is a white paper crafted based on years of research on the relationships between university leadership and student activists. I won't claim that this guide is perfect, but I am confident that it will point both administrators at Penn and staff beyond our institution in the right direction. Colbeck and Wharton Michael (2006) discuss using public scholarship as a central organizing concept for integrating the domains of faculty work. They provide several definitions of public scholarship and a history of the categorization and evaluation of faculty work (e.g., teaching, service, research) and how this has shaped faculty effort. They propose re-integrating these domains to more accurately reflect how faculty conduct their work and connect back to the public service model of land grant universities. Penn State’s Public Scholarship Associates is used as an example.

Higher education institutions are commonly in the limelight with events related to the current political and economic climate. So much so that free speech has been an increasing concern among institutional leadership. According to Inside Higher Ed’s Leadership Survey, 40% of Provosts said that world events have stressed their institution’s speech policies to the point of needing to be revised. Additionally, when asked, only 36% of institutions said they have had a clear policy to respond to student complaints about extramural speech and only 31% said they have a policy to handle online trolling or other outside attacks on faculty—an issue that is becoming more common. 🎓 Confidence in higher ed has fallen to new lows. Shocking! College was the primary rite of passage for our culture. We believed that knowledge was power and that university was the primary path toward this knowledge. Then, somehow, our culture started speaking out of both sides of its mouth: 🔬 Follow the Science! ✊ Science is racist!
