🌟 Igniting the Spark of STEM Talent and Brilliance! 🌟 The Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C., is currently witnessing a momentous occasion as it plays host to over 1000 NSF S-STEM scholars and 100 faculty mentors from across the nation at the inaugural 2023 SSTEM Scholars Meeting, orchestrated by the AAAS as part of the AAAS S-STEM Initiative! It is an electrifying celebration of brilliance! But this 2.5 day event isn’t just about lectures and do-what, how, when, etc; it’s an immersive experience in learning, sharing, presenting, networking, and innovation. Imagine education and career fairs buzzing with excitement, poster sessions showcasing groundbreaking research, and the guidance of esteemed faculty mentors lighting up the path to success. At Career Enhancement Forum, one of our goals for 2024 is to help secure undergraduate scholarships for 10 recent WASSCE graduates from Ghana. Our targeted approach involves submitting a minimum of two scholarship applications per student to optimize their chances of success across various North American universities. Considering the efficiency of our team's efforts, there is a potential to expand our number and admit an additional 3-5 students, surpassing our initial goal for 2024. This expansion would result in supporting a total of 13-15 deserving students, fostering their pursuit of undergraduate scholarships in North America. In a recent article by Sunaina Kumar, she emphasized a commonplace phenomenon regarding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. "The underrepresentation of women in STEM in every region of the world, and a peculiar global trend about the participation of women is that even though graduation rates are higher among women than men, women are less likely to undertake studies in STEM fields, particularly engineering, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and physics." The compromised involvement and participation of women in undertaking STEM research is a telling story about negative conditioning surrounding the sciences for women. Furthermore, it could negatively impact the overall participation of minorities in STEM subjects. As a social science researcher, my experiences in STEM-based subjects are anecdotal and perhaps not as astute as those of a STEM researcher. However, as a woman, I am thoroughly convinced, and a bit indignant, that I was guided away from real opportunities in the sciences owing to the lack of a "scientific" rigor. Proper and meaningful guidance takes time and dedicated effort. College to Careers: Navigating the Purpose of Education in a STEM-Driven World In this series on Let's Talk Ed, Chris Forde and Zahi Atallah are joined by Kirby Lund, to discuss the evolving dynamics of education. Specifically, we come together to explore the delicate balance between STEM and liberal arts education. In the past few decades there has been a push for STEM at the expense of liberal arts education. Furthermore, politicians continue devaluing the significance of the humanities education at a time when the US is reeling for a lack of teachers, daycare workers, psychologists and counselors, social workers, and other critical humanities-based lines of careers. This is compounded by the widespread concern about the gaps in critical critical thinking and prevalence of massive mis/disinformation on many fronts. We start by exploring the critical need for a holistic approach that goes beyond STEM, fostering a well-rounded education for a richer and more profound learning experience. We focus on how humanities and liberal arts create a well-rounded workforce and society. We also lament the major disparities in income based on the choice of humanities majors in colleges, despite their critical nature to our society. In the second segment, we explore the pathway from college to careers at a time when many research universities are refocusing their interest on linking education and students to careers. We remind the listeners about John Dewey's philosophy on the purpose of education. A philosophy that emphasizes that education is “life itself”, as well as a method of learning by doing, an apprenticeship of sorts. We explore how the contemporary purpose of college education had shifted away form a preparation for careers. In our third segment, we tackle the question of what we think society would look like without humanities education. In this discussion, we scrutinize the consequences of neglecting the humanities and the essential role this line of education plays in shaping a critically thinking citizenry of socially aware individuals, who are discerning and communicate effectively.
