Product Security Engineer at SUSE, CISSP, ISO 27001 LI, IPMA Certified Project Management Associate (Level D)
FCC: Telecoms Have Seven Days to Disclose Breaches The US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has adopted a new rule requiring telecommunications companies and VoIP providers to notify authorities within seven days of detecting a breach. The organizations that will need to be notified include the FCC, the FBI, and the Secret Service. The new rule also states that covered organizations must notify affected customers “without unreasonable delay … and in no case more than 30 days following reasonable determination of a breach.” If organizations “determine that no harm to customers is reasonably likely to occur,” they do not need to notify customers. https://lnkd.in/ecQzWHw5

Stir/Shaken was a term coined to describe a set of procedures and protocols created to help prevent call spam and fraudulent activity across telephone networks. This is a global problem, with calls originating from both VOIP and traditional networks. Stir/Shaken works by using digital certificates to confirm that the number a call originates from is validated from a secure source. Simply put, each service provider gets the certificate for the call in question from another trusted source or provider. This is then used to confirm the caller's validity by verifying the source of the call. Currently, in the US alone, an estimated 4 billion robocalls are made per month with a high percentage of them being flagged as spam calls. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was tasked to come up with a solution to help combat this issue and Stir/Shaken was created. Legislation was passed which meant that as of June 30th 2021, all US carriers were required to implement these regulatory requirements, or face fines and further action. At XConnect, we’re continuously committed to working across the telecoms industry to fight fraud and build #trustintelecoms throughout the ecosystem. Across the globe, the frequency of SMS attacks is steadily rising, with a notable presence of malicious URLs in these messages. This trend has prompted the introduction of substantial regulations and laws that mandate decisive measures by telecommunications operators. While certain markets outright prohibit SMS messages containing URLs, the prevailing expectation in most markets is for operators to implement filtering mechanisms to weed out malicious URLs.
