💭Predictions for AI in 2024 💭 AI has been used within cybersecurity for well over a decade – largely to search out the threat needle in the threat haystack. 2023, however, saw the emergence and general availability of LLM AI, commonly known as gen-AI; ChatGPT is the iconic frontrunner. AI is now front and centre for everyone. Some predictions: - Deepfakes: phishing video and voice accessory The inclusion of AI-generated voice and video into targeted spear-phishing and BEC will make attacks far more believable. It may happen during 2024, but the jury is still out. -Disinformation in the election year “AI will be used to create disinformation and influence operations in the runup to the high-profile elections 2024. This will include synthetic written, spoken, and potentially even image or video content,” warns Andy Patel, former senior researcher at WithSecure. - Government and self-regulation 2024 will be a big year for government intervention in AI development and use. As always, the regulatory dilemma will be protecting people and privacy without preventing innovation and economic growth. The use of AI technology is exploding in popularity. But is it safe? I've already seen AI used to commit crime, to create deepfakes, and to write malware. AI has been used to clone voices for fake kidnapping and other types of crime. Hackers are using AI to find security vulnerabilities to make it easier to break into your networks and devices. AI is being used to write higher quality phishing emails to increase revenues from this type of cybercrime. But, there are no standards regarding the control of or limits to the use of AI, and no specific laws in the U.S. that apply. President Biden's recent executive order gave the responsibility for creating standards for AI safety to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), with a deadline of July 26, 2024. But NIST has been given no additional staff or budget to accomplish this goal. This is unrealistic, to say the least. It may look good politically, but has very little chance of producing anything that will be effective. With AI developing at an exponential rate, the technology will be far ahead of any standards that NIST could create today (if that were even possible). This is one more example of government trying to address evolving technology when it may already be too late. Law enforcement and investigators need to realize that the techno-criminals are already using AI, and they will evolve with every new type of technology that appears. We will all need to use some type of AI in future investigations, due to the lack of budgets, staffing, and expertise in our profession, along with the exploding volumes of data being generated every day that we'll need to sort through for digital evidence. But we may be forced into using AI without any laws or regulations to tell us the appropriate ways to do that. We also need to evolve to be ready for what's coming next.
