As we head into #LabourDay I think of #seniors who worked their whole lives to now find themselves struggling to pay for food & rent, seek a new place to live for the fist time in decades at exorbitant rents. So I ask you to consider donating to Pacifica’s Senior Support Fund. In Victoria, supporting the fund means helping us continue to provide eviction prevention services, #housing and financial navigation, direct short-term support such as decluttering and food access. In Nanaimo it also means directly providing affordable housing that includes meals and light supports for vulnerable seniors who can’t live independently but don’t qualify for long term care. At the Pacifica Seniors Lodge our residents are between 77 and 98 years old and 25 of them came to us directly from homelessness. There are many needs in our #community but this one in particular is becoming harder for us to meet with skyrocketing need met with rising service delivery costs (such as food). CAF report 📖 The 20th annual UK Giving report from our members at Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) reveals that charitable donations in the UK reached a record high last year, showcasing the generosity of the British public. However, the report also highlights concerns such as: 👇🏼 a decreasing number of regular donors 💰 the impact of inflation = both of which reduce the real value of donations over time. These findings emphasize the need for strategies to maintain diversity in funding sources and ensure the effectiveness of charitable giving in addressing societal needs amidst economic pressures. People affected by fuel poverty cut back on other essentials, such as food, or they ration energy use by heating only one room. Many people will also take respite in other warm places. However, with high energy costs and other living expenses, low incomes and energy-inefficient homes, these measures only go so far and should not be what anyone should need to resort to. People in fuel poverty face serious health risks from living in cold homes, with cold-related deaths representing the biggest weather-related source of mortality in the country. Among the worst affected will be the most vulnerable, including children. Living in fuel poverty can have a detrimental impact on children’s health, well-being and their ability to learn. Children growing up in cold, damp, and mouldy homes with inadequate ventilation have above average rates of respiratory infections and asthma, chronic ill health, and disability. They are also more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and slower physical growth and cognitive development. Our Surviving Winter Appeal aims to help the most vulnerable in our local Cambridgeshire communities.....

The 2023 Geography of Giving reports that human services is the most commonly supported issue area in 30 surveyed large cities. Charities such as food banks, homeless shelters, and youth programs were among this list. 80% of donors also tended to support local charities in their communities.
