Overflowing with gratitude to Councilmember Joaquin Martinez and his sons for their extraordinary generosity during this challenging time following Hurricane Beryl. Their support in providing water to the tenants at Sunrise Lofts, our sanctuary for youth aging out of foster care, means the world to us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! 🙏💙 . . . #tejanocenter #sunriselofts

Day 2 after hurricane in Houston: “Disaster Community” has begun. 5 families from our church — and two from outside — have spent the day in our home. We have power when most don’t. We have shared meals, sung songs, and sat and talked. We are preparing sleeping arrangements for all. Our church has facilitated housing for many and are making sure that members are safe and cool. During our time together, we reflected on why we don’t spend more time with the people we care about most. The answer: convenience and habit and the pull of isolation. Isolation is destroyed in Disaster Communities. I would submit that this is exactly what our country needs most. We have republicans and democrats eating together and watching kids (and dogs). We are not watching the news or social media. What if our nation operated like Disaster Communities? What if we cared more about connecting and sharing and less about all that divides? What would it take to keep this approach beyond the disaster? #hurricane #houston #disaster #community
