Is the year half over already? I am partially through my term as president of AIA|DC, and I look forward to using every remaining day (including holidays) to make AIA|DC more relevant to our members, our profession and our community. At the board’s July meeting, we outlined our Q3 rocks (action items) and wanted to share: For the Community Working Group (Abigail R. Brown, FAIA, Gregory Chang, FAIA, Mary Fitch, Joseph McKenley, AIA, and Roark Redwood), work is focused on energizing October’s #ArchitectureMonth, including a panel discussion on the future of architectural education with deans of our local colleges and universities. In addition to expanding our members, including Associate AIA and Affiliates, the Members Working Group (Abimbola Bamidele, Eleanor Choi, AIA, LEED AP BD-C, Lawrence Gill AIA LEED AP, Alison Pavilonis, AIA, Yiselle Santos Rivera, AIA, SHRM-SCP) is building on the success of last year's mixer and planning another with the DCNOMA (DC Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects). The Profession Working Group (Ellen Hatton, Tom Lenar, Joanna Schmickel, FAIA, Mika Naraynsingh, AIA, and myself) will continue to support and strengthen our Professional Committees. We hosting an in-person Open House on 16 September at the #DistrictArchitectureCenter. Mark your calendar to meet committee leadership and learn about what our committees do. Don’t worry, we aren’t taking the summer off! In just a few short weeks, AIA|DC is hosting the first of a two-part series on Permit Streamlining. We start with a virtual townhall featuring District of Columbia Department of Buildings staff including Director Brian Hanlon. Goals include hearing about current initiatives, as well as collecting feedback on permitting friction points. The second part of the series focused on developing solutions in a workshop / charette format, will take place in the fall. https://lnkd.in/eV7rt5uz

After a brief hiatus, Callum Brewer is back on the road - well would have been if it had not been for the train strike yesterday - delivering his CPD on Noise and Planning. We were virtually hosted by the team working in Housing, Neighbourhood and Building Services of Portsmouth City Council. We hope you found it useful! This CPD explains the complex landscape of noise related legislation, policies and planning guidance (national, regional and local) and our 8-step approach to noise assessments. We provide examples of how to adopt good acoustic design on new noise-sensitive and noise-generating developments and talk through a number of projects we have worked on. Primarily covering the residential sector, this CPD does also look at industrial sites and transport noise. Read more about our work in the Planning sector and with Local Authorities here:- https://lnkd.in/ekkksypB and https://lnkd.in/e7uc5D8Q #cpd #localauthority #planning #planningguidance #noise #acousticdesign #residential #industrial #transportnoise

The education symposium focusing on public building occupancy safety featured a demonstration showcasing the importance of using specialty films for window fortification. In contrast to a standard 8 mm film, a specialty film that is four times stronger and at the same cost was highlighted. The demonstration involved throwing four large rocks at the window, which did not penetrate the specialty film. Additionally, the demonstrator proceeded to beat the window with a baseball bat, showcasing the film’s exceptional strength and durability as the bat did not penetrate the window. This demonstration emphasized that there is much more to window fortification than standard ballistic films. The impressive performance of the specialty film in withstanding various impacts highlights the importance of utilizing advanced technologies to enhance public building occupancy safety. This serves as a valuable lesson for attendees of the symposium, emphasizing the significance of investing in high-quality window fortification solutions to ensure the security and safety of public spaces. The video is most impressive, check it out!
