Having an architect in the cabinet is critical to advising on issues of the built environment.
“Architects are the civic problem solvers you didn’t know you needed,” said AIA President Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC, addressing the 2024 United States Conference of Mayors. 🔑 Ensuring expert, licensed #architects are on the ground guiding city leaders to protect and preserve America’s built environment is key to Dowdell’s agenda. City of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is a perfect example of that. “You can tackle the issues on the front end, listen to the community on the front end, and on the back end get the results – that is a win-win for everyone," said Mayor Cantrell. In early history, #architects were THE designer...engineer, surveyor, planner, and conceptual artist all wrapped into one. We've diversified our talent significantly since then, but now more than ever is a wholistic approach required. No building is an island. Professionals need to be on the same page and in the same code book; a task sometimes easier said than done. Municipalities in particular are vulnerable to numerous avenues of outsourcing, sometimes for cost reasons, sometimes for liability reasons. Having someone on staff with their finger on the pulse not only cuts down on email chain length, but integrates the project designer with the community--it allows them to become part of the solution, rather than one of many third-parties.

Reroofing a highrise is an adventure that never fails to ignite one’s passion for architecture and construction. The complexities and intricacies of such projects are what keep our minds sharp and creativity flowing. There are so many crucial elements to consider – material delivery logistics, tackling project-specific issues, ensuring utmost safety, and, of course, providing seamless site access. The high altitude presents its share of challenges, but it also provides us with the most breathtaking views. The reward for the extra effort is the panoramic vista of the city skyline. It's amazing how reroofing a highrise brings together a team of dedicated professionals, each contributing their unique expertise. The camaraderie and synergy that emerge from such collaborations are truly inspiring. The team at DTR Consulting Services, Inc. would like to thank the team from SOPREMA USA, especially Missy McLain and Alan LaPierre! Here’s to everyone involved in the journey of reroofing highrises! Let's continue to embrace the challenges and revel in the views! #Buildingscienceguys #DTRConsulting #Waterproofing #Constructionindustry #Buildingenvelope #Sustainability #PanoramicViews #PassionForArchitecture #Buildingscience #Enclosurespecialist #Buildinglifecycle #ReroofingHighrise #ArchitectureAdventure #ConstructionExcellence #Teamwork #SafetyFirst

These sketches of Paddington Station give human touch to the designing process which is quite rare in this age of computer modelling. The atrium is connecting the station to nature at the same time reducing the cost of ventilation. At last the only thing I can imagine being a geotechnical Engineer about this UG station is that it involves a lot of earthwork in an underground structure.
As we celebrate the Elizabeth line's impressive milestone of 300 million journeys since opening, I'm reminded of my time at Arup in 2007. These are some early hand sketches, showcasing our studies for the Paddington Station project on the Elizabeth line. Our team's collaboration led to a great achievement. Through a focused architectural-led Value Engineering process, we created a more compact and efficient schematic design for the station. This design cut the station's length by 20%, reduced its size, protected nearby listed structures, and improved the flow for passengers with an open atrium that brings in natural light. This work didn't just meet standards; it introduced key design features critical to the project’s success. Proud to have contributed to a key piece of London's transport, here's to the power of innovative design and teamwork. #Arup #Architecture #ElizabethLine #Innovation https://lnkd.in/ec8PVr-D

When Metropolitan Transportation Authority Construction & Development embarked on a complex, multi-phased redevelopment of New York Penn Station, they needed a design that embraced innovation and high quality, while delivering value on an ambitious schedule — a tall order for a transit project in a major metropolitan city. To meet these goals, the MTA chose the alternative project delivery method known as design-build so they could make the most of their significant infrastructure investment. Design-build delivery integrates design and construction at the beginning of the project, making costs easier to forecast, fast-tracking the timeline, streamlining communication and promoting collaborative, innovative solutions. AECOM was the lead designer for the design-builder, Skanska, to deliver Penn Station’s revitalization across multiple project phases, including Phase 1, the new East End Gateway entrance, and Phase 2, an expansion of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) concourse. Learn more about how our design-build approach achieved game-changing modernizations to this major transportation hub, which is transforming transit on Manhattan’s West Side: https://lnkd.in/ebq-KRte #RethinkWhatsNext #AlternativeDelivery #DesignBuild #Collaboration #Quality

...this is the exchange building, downtown Detroit, some of us here should be familiar with this place, built top-down by Liftbuilt Technology. after conventionally erecting the core walls, the floors are built on the ground and lifted to position...very smart. ...how would it work for more complex floor geometries with non-central core walls? ...what do you think? the future of highrise construction🤔? #structuralengineering. #construction #smartconstruction #techconstruction #projects
