A Black Box: How Poor Accessibility to Information Blocks College Opportunities On Let's Talk Ed this week, we, Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde, tackle the concern that the poor accessibility and clarity of information in higher education can negatively impact college access and student success. In this three-part series, we explore how poor access to information can prevent learners from reaching their college goals, and ultimately, the College Promise. In segment 1 called"A Black Box: How Poor Accessibility to Information Blocks College Opportunities", we discuss the perceived obstacles students face due to inaccessible information, and how this barrier can significantly hinder their college opportunities. The information may be hidden in massive websites and thick catalog. Moreover, the verbiage used may be too technical, thus foreign to those outside of higher education. In segment 2 entitled "Through Their Eyes: Understanding College Information Through Student Perspectives”, we shift focus to the student perspective, examining how information is often designed by administrators and for administrators, making it difficult for students to navigate and understand. Perhaps it is time to “walk a mile in students’ shoes” when it comes to the type of information and where it is made available. Finally, in segment 3 titled"Providing Better Information: Key to Unlocking Access and Supporting Success", we provide actionable solutions on how to improve information accessibility, ensuring that students have clear, understandable, and easily accessible information to support their educational journey. We believe that it is time for colleges to address students in a language that makes sense to those learners, using information tools used by them, and making everything easily accessible. Helping educators create digital spaces that improve student outcomes and increase belonging. | @InScribe
The session starts in 15 minutes!
Helping higher education build communities to scale support and improve student outcomes | Co-founder and CEO at InScribe |
I'm looking forward to sharing the stage today with Janelle Elias at the Technology and Learning Conference from Montgomery County Community College. We're going to talk about the importance of student sense of belonging, especially for non-traditional learners, and the role virtual communities, like InScribe, play in supporting this goal. The work Rio Salado College has done has truly transformed the experience for their students - significantly increasing student belonging and peer connectedness in just 6 weeks. If you're attending the conference, please join this important session. If not - learn more about the work from Janelle and her team in this study, published in partnership with the #CollegeInnovationNetwork. https://lnkd.in/gBhCMGCQ

Excited to share this new CAEL /The EvoLLLution: A Modern Campus Illumination report, from Lana Munip and me, on Comprehensive Learner Records. Highlights: there is a lot of interest within higher ed in moving towards skills-based approaches, but only about half have plans for CLRs, and not a lot of necessary groundwork laid to make something like CLRs a reality. https://lnkd.in/ggXR8tE9

Working with Radka Newton is always a life-affirming experience. It was characteristically generous of her to involve me in this article. We explore the ability of service design methods to provide richer and deeper insights into student experience than the sort of largely quantitative surveys, such as NSS and module evaluation forms, that have dominated student experience discussions in HE. We advocate for methods that help us understand what students are really feeling, dreaming about and aspiring for. https://lnkd.in/ddmhbrJy

Starting university for anyone is scary, moving away probably for the first time, worrying about making friends or if you will cope with your course are all very normal fears when you start university. Students going back after the summer break can also be nervous, seeing friends after a long gap, moving into new accommodation with friends, and keeping up with your course can all be daunting. Student Minds have some excellent support material, for students at any stage of their studies https://lnkd.in/eQ5Q437S
