💰 How can we attract more cross-border investments in startups? 📈 I estimate that over 95% of early-stage investments are local, and this is for several valid reasons. Building trust, conducting due diligence, and supporting startups are all easier when they are nearby. 💡 However, there are compelling reasons for both investors and startups to consider international early-stage investments. 🌍 Let's face it: many local startup ecosystems are relatively small, so the likelihood of finding a startup that aligns with your investment criteria locally is slim. There may be more relevant opportunities in other ecosystems. 👥 Likewise, for startups, early-stage investments aren't just about securing funding; it's also about gaining access to investors who can offer valuable expertise. Why limit yourself to those within a 50-kilometer radius? 🤔 Theoretically, this makes sense, but evaluating international startups' quality can be challenging. Gathering information about founders and their reputations isn't easy without local investors you trust. 🌐 This is why physical startup events remain crucial. These events provide a platform for establishing new connections between investors from different ecosystems. 🤝 Take, for instance, my investment in Norwegian Deckmatch. It wouldn't have happened if Kremena Tosheva and SNÖ Ventures hadn't invited me to their Oslo event. There, I met Léopold Gasteen and reconnected with Arne Tonning from Alliance VC (who led the investing round in Deckmatch). 🚀 Next week, a similar opportunity awaits at TechBBQ, where I'm aware that the participation of international investors, both angel investors and venture capitalists, is on the rise. 🗓️ I will attend and take the chance to grow and nurture relationships with international investors. Hopefully, this will pave the way for even more international investments in the future. I look forward to seeing you in Copenhagen next week! #techbbq #investments #ecosystems #startups

A few months ago I had the opportunity to work on a proposal for #innovationpolicy actions with the Dealroom.co and GLOBSEC teams, and I found out a lot of interesting things about the Danube Region's innovation ecosystem. I was delighted to read, last week, in the report "The State of Innovation in the Danube Valley", about the startups, innovation and venture capital fueling a new industrial revolution along the banks of Europe's greatest river. Data on the startup ecosystem of the Danube Valley, edited by Dealroom in partnership with GLOBSEC & the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economy, Austria. I highlighted some interesting ideas from the report: 📌 The Danube Region startup ecosystem is worth a combined €157B in 2023 📌 88% of VC investment has gone into startups in the Western and Central Danube regions 📌 the Danube Tech Valley attracts foreign startups & tech companies: there are over 1,000 secondary offices of global startups across 60+ cities in the region 📌 In Danube Tech Valley SaaS startups receive more investment in comparison with the global VC investment 📌 The Danube Region has a highly educated and skilled workforce, particularly in STEM fields. This talent pool is crucial for creating, developing and implementing innovative solutions 📌 Value creation is widely unequal across the Danube Tech Valley, with Western and Central Danube accounting for 90% of the combined enterprise value of all startups in the region For more data and statistics, I invite you to read the report 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPm_pShS #innovation #DanubeRegion #TechValley

We participated in the #techarena2024 in Stockholm last week. It brought together tech enthusiasts, innovation catalysts as ourselves, startups, and investors. A few key takeaways from our senior advisor Rickard Mosell, who went: "It was great to see the buzz and excitement at the event. It really showcased the vibrant tech scene here in Stockholm and across the Nordics. You could feel the energy in the air, with everyone discussing new ideas and making connections." "Also, it was interesting to see the dynamic between startups and investors. While there were plenty of matchmaking opportunities, it was clear that startups still face some hurdles in finding the right fit in terms of funding and alignment with investor interests. Still, it was great to see them getting valuable pitching experience and refining their pitches." "One of the highlights for me was the chance to hear from industry experts and gain insights into emerging technologies like AI. The Tech Arena is a great platform for startups to benchmark themselves and get a sense of where the market is heading. It helps us all stay ahead of the curve." 'Tech Arena is not just about networking and innovation; it is also a place to learn new things. It gave us a glimpse into the future of tech and gave us a hunch of the tools we need to steer in the ever-changing landscape of this particular industry." #techarena2024 #ai #tech #deeptech #startup

Yesterday, Danske Tech Startups // Danish Tech Startups 🇩🇰 🚀 Tech Startups hosted #CopenhagenTownhall 🙌. The Townhall kicked off with a fireside chat featuring Casper H Rasmussen, Co-founder and CEO/CTO of Danish climate tech scale-up, Monta. The fireside chat was hosted by Stine Mølgaard Sørensen, Partner at Alliance VC. Casper shared parts of Monta's journey from idea to scale-up, including insights from fundraising. Very inspiring! The Townhall then continued with a discussion focusing on the intersection between the Startup world, Tech, Strategic priorities and Geopolitics. Mikkel Hippe, Chief Strategy Officer at Session, was invited to share some of his insights on the topic at a panel with Anne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, and professor Rebecca Adler-Nissen. The panel was moderated by Esben Gadsbøll. Mikkel shared his experiences conducting business outside of China 🇨🇳 . Over ten years, Mikkel and Tradeshift, a company he co-founded, established two joint ventures in China and gained strategic leverage on a global scale, becoming one of the few companies that could offer electronic invoicing services to global businesses. However, due to geopolitical conditions, he and Tradeshift had to make the difficult decision to sell off the Chinese portion of the business to a joint venture partner. Mikkel and his company continuously evaluated the risk-versus-reward ratio and had to adjust their strategy based on scenario planning that took the geopolitical factors into consideration. What can we learn from this example? We can try to predict the next curveball, and sometimes, if we have done our scenario planning right, like Mikkel and his company had, we might be prepared when the curveball hits. At other times, however, we must improvise and “just” be ready when change occurs, because it might occur out of the blue (a so-called blackswan event). But even in those circumstances, a bit of preparation might help us 💡 . The fact is, that we can prepare ourselves and our companies to be more change-ready and antifragile (meaning - gaining from disorder!) by diversifying and decentralizing, and nurturing a culture of experimentation, curiosity, reflection and agility. The term antifragility was introduced by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his book with the same name from 2012. Thank you, Esben, for organizing yet another great Townhall 👏 !
