BK/MB seamlessly spearheaded the engineering endeavours for the revolutionary Grafton Community Centre, now transformed into the dynamic space known as Headspace. Their expertise resonated through every facet, from the foundational intricacies of slabs and footings to the innovative employment of tilt-up concrete panels. The main auditorium stood as a testament to their ingenuity, where curved structural steel frames converged. Meanwhile, the rest of the Centre stood tall with steel structural frames, a hallmark of their meticulous planning. Not limited to the built environment, BK/MB's influence extended to the civil engineering realm, etching their names in every cornerstone of this remarkable project. With the Snow Event here in Colorado we believe it's a perfect timing for A Primer on Snow Loads and Related Issues during a Snow Event As we start the discussion of snow loads and related issues that result during or after a snowstorm, it is important to mention that snow loads are typically governed by standards set by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) / Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) ASCE/SEI 7 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures, with the latest edition being issued in 2016. ASCE further provides guidance in their “Guide to Snow Load Provisions of ASCE 7-16” document. Start of October – Cooler nights are nearly upon us, but this is a great time to get outside and enjoy the warmth of the sun. Our #Mondaythought this week is about our project: Hounslow - Roof Top Development. We all know how hard land is to come by in London, one solution to create more homes is to extend upwards. Here 77 new homes were provided by adding an extra storey to seven existing buildings. Through the careful selection of materials, the additional loading to the buildings was kept to a minimum which in turn mitigated the need for time consuming and expensive strengthening works to both the superstructure and foundations. This was achieved by providing a hot rolled steel transfer deck at roof level, then utilising a cold rolled steel panelised system, constructed off-site, to provide the new roof top units. To minimise disruption to the residents these works were able to be carried out with them all left in-situ. Thus, also negating the requirements for expensive and time-consuming decanting. We worked on behalf of United Living Group, and with Baily Garner LLP and Langley Structures Ltd to complete this project. You can read more about here: https://lnkd.in/e5MRzzFG What we had to say about his project: “Roof top developments are a great way to provide new homes, however it’s vitally important to get the advice of a Structural Engineer early in the decision making process” – Malcolm Dunn – Director. #mondaythought #Tullys #teamwork #together #structure #civil #engineering

Historic preservation plays a crucial role in our modern world by preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainable development, but the lack of educational programs on #historicpreservation is significant. Recognizing this gap, Johns Hopkins’ Civil and Systems Engineering (CaSE) is one of the few programs offering specialized courses in historic preservation for civil engineers. CaSE provides students with a unique education in preserving and enhancing the structural integrity of historical structures. They are taught how to maintain the physical integrity of structures, while also learning about historic materials that may no longer be in widespread use. Take a look at American Society of Civil Engineers’ recent “Civil Engineering” article that highlights importance of the unique role civil engineers play in historic preservation: https://lnkd.in/gV6wJXUG

Concrete Expansion Joints: Concrete Expansion Joints in Infrastructure Stability. • A concrete expansion joint is a deliberate gap or space between two adjacent concrete structures or slabs. • The primary purpose of the expansion joint is to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of concrete caused by temperature variations. • By allowing for controlled movement, these joints help prevent cracks and preserve the structural integrity of the concrete. • The expansion joints significantly reduce the risk of structural damage and contribute to the longevity of concrete infrastructure like roads, bridges, and buildings. #roads #bridges #expansionjoints #infrastructure #design #structuralengineering
