It’s not often we come across a bridge described as one of the “scariest” drives in the world! The 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 was first opened in 1952 and is an impressive 186 ft high, five lanes wide and cost around $200 million to build (including the second three lane span added in 1973). Back then it was the ‘world's longest continuous over-water steel structure!’ 😱 Considered scary due to its height, narrow spans, lack of a hard shoulder and low guardrails, the bridge is also regularly battered by high winds and has been closed on no less than four occasions due to weather related incidents! No wonder it can make some people nervous. 🚀 That is not to take away from its impact. Analysis has shown that by connecting the more rural Eastern shore to its more urban West Maryland, properly values rose in the former 3000% between the 50’s to 90’s. Also increasing the population dramatically in the same period by 88%. 🌱There has been speculation recently about the need to expand the bridge due to its high traffic congestion, in no small part due to the population explosion there. However, there are also some concerns over the environmental impact on the Bay itself of such an expansion. 💰There is also the issue of cost. A 2015 estimated the cost of maintaining the bridge alone would total $3.25 billion over the next fifty years, even without an additional span. This could be an opportunity for civil engineering innovation, exploring greener construction techniques and other tools such as traffic analysis to identify the best solution. Either way its yet another case study of the impact civil engineers make in our lives! #civilengineering #maryland #bridge

One of the most significant undertakings civil engineering has ever seen; Hoover Dam had over 21,000 men working on it throughout The Great Depression, with an entire city – known as Boulder City – erected to house the workers. Today, Hoover Dam is considered to have an incredible legacy. It plays a vital role in flood prevention of the Colorado River, and its 17 turbines generate electricity that power 1.3 million homes. Its role in American history, and its part in industrial evolution, make it a true wonder of the modern world. What other engineering feats do you think parallel this? Comment below. Ever dreamt of transforming a large plot into a thriving neighborhood? Subdivision might be the answer! But before you break out the bulldozers, there are some key steps to consider: 1. Planning & Feasibility ️ Zoning regulations: Is subdivision even allowed? Flood risks, infrastructure needs, and environmental factors all play a role. 2. Surveys & Engineering Precise land measurements & a legal plat defining boundaries, easements, and access. Civil engineers might design roads, utilities, and drainage systems for your new lots. 3. Approval Process ️ Submit your plat and supporting documents for local approval. This ensures the subdivision meets all zoning codes and infrastructure requirements. 4. Utilities & Infrastructure ️ Time to bring the essentials! Water, sewer, electricity, roads, sidewalks, and drainage systems. 5. Final Touches & Sale Once construction is complete and the plat is recorded, your individual lots are ready for their next chapter! #landdevelopment #realestate #subdivision #developmentplanning #bringyourvisiontolife

Highways play a vital role in connecting communities and fostering economic growth. The construction process involves meticulous planning, route selection, and environmental assessments to ensure sustainable development. #Infrastructure #HighwayConstruction #UrbanPlanning. Engineers and architects then design the road, accounting for safety, traffic flow, and environmental impact. Land acquisition is crucial, often involving legal processes to secure the necessary space. The construction phase employs heavy machinery for grading, paving, and structure erection. Quality control measures maintain adherence to design specifications and safety standards. The completed highway opens to the public, but ongoing maintenance is essential for safety and functionality. #Transportation #RoadMaintenance #CommunityDevelopment Marcio Leão Parastoo Azad Nitesh Kumar Purohit Pareekh Jain Dr.Subramanian, Ph.D., FNAE, F.ASCE, M.ACI Narayanan Felipe Ochoa Cornejo 👨🏻🏫🇨🇱 Yeo Chee Min Oliver Jones Tanvir Hussain Prashant Srivastava Civil Er.Jai Kumar Tiwari Nitin Gupta Florian Palatini Grant LeBeau, E.I.T. Hello, LinkedIn network! I’m excited to share insights from my recent learning journey with the LinkedIn course "InfraWorks: Drainage Design" by Lynda Sharkey. InfraWorks is an incredible tool for civil infrastructure design. I learned how to create watersheds, which channel rainfall and snowmelt to water bodies, crucial for managing water resources and preventing floods. I also explored designing culverts to allow water flow under roads, ensuring roadway integrity during heavy rain. Additionally, I delved into creating drainage networks with outfalls to direct water away from roads, preventing accumulation and damage. #Infraworks #Drainage_Design #Infrastructure #Wet_Utilities #Civil3D
