I have always liked the story of John Shook, the first American manager to work for Toyota in Japan. What he discovered, was not a group of managers telling people what to think or how to perform their work, instead, he experienced the deliberate practice of experimentation. Toyota had developed a set of behaviors that advocated continuous learning and adaptation to new circumstances.
I’ve tried to mirror this practice with my teams, pushing them to think outside the box, learn more, and continue to “sharpen the saw.” Today, I would like to acknowledge one of my team members for exemplifying these traits.
