Yes! All of you! All of you get to come to NYC with me later this week! but which pair of you will be joining me next week at the National Credit Union Administration, NCUA DEI Summit 2023 in Washington DC? Holy Imposter Syndrome! I am speaking to a group of Presidents, CEOs and Leaders from Credit Unions around the country. I was hired to speak several months ago for this event but as the weeks have gone by, I have had this reoccurring vision of people in blue suits and conservative ties looking at me thinking, SHE HAS GOT TO BE FROM MARS! (No offense Aliens) This reoccurring vision prompted me to reach out to the event organizers last week to ask them if I need to tone down my whole jam and W.E.I.R.D. framework on belonging at work. You know, like wear pantyhose sensible, mid-heel pumps a black or navy skirt suit AND take my pop-art out of my slide deck Ya know, be everything I'm not to try to fit in to my made-up and perhaps very biased version of what people who work for credit unions think and dress like. The event organizers responsed, "Absolutely Not!" I felt so relieved and while I may not be the best at very many things, I'm the best at being me! And hey, that's what people want from work! When we feel safe to choose our level of authenticity, that's when we experience a sense of belonging at work! And so - I'M BRINGING ALL THE WEIRD to share my talk, "The Belonging Equation." Even people who may or may not think I'm from MARS need to belong and need to foster the experience for others to succeed personally, professionally and organizationally. So who's coming with me? Many times on social media we present things perfectly. Our successes, accomplishments and achievements. That's all well and good. But let's be honest: there are times things don't go so well. Let me share one of my recent "trip-ups" (pun intended). I'm about to do a two minute spotlight speech at the Credit Union Leadership Convention. You know, hundreds and hundreds of credit union executives and board members. A speech I've spent hours preparing and practicing. And as they call my name and I go up on stage, I trip and stumble on the stairs! Almost did a full face plant! Of course the key was to recover quickly and act like that's just the entrance I had planned all along! Some lessons learned: don't race up stairs, practice your walk just as much as your speech and don't take yourself too seriously. In all honesty, the key was to not let the "trip up" affect the speech. Rather than let it throw me off, I used the extra adrenaline to bring additional energy to the talk. But the next time I'm speaking on stage I will start out by watching the floor and not the audience! #lessonslearned #speaking #creditunions

As I reflect on my journey, from starting as a Teller with an MBA to becoming a Vice President at Bank of America within 7 years; and my foray into the political space as a Candidate for Maryland State Delegate, I am reminded that every experience is a stepping stone to greater understanding and development. Here are some invaluable lessons I've learned along the way: 1. Not every effort will result in victory, but every attempt is a victory in itself. My campaign for Maryland State Delegate didn't end with a win, but it taught me the power of resilience and the importance of staying true to one's vision. 2. My career path was not a straight line. It was filled with twists, turns, and unexpected opportunities. The key was to remain adaptable and open to new possibilities. 3. Whether in the corporate world or in public service, leadership is about serving others. It's about making a positive impact and lifting others as we climb. 4. My transition from a Teller to a Vice President was fueled by persistence. It's about showing up, doing the work, and not being afraid to take on new challenges. 5. As I look back, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible show of solidarity during my campaign period. Families, friends, volunteers, supporters, and local leaders came together, they showed out, not just in numbers, but in passion and dedication. So, whether you are taking your first step or your thousandth, know that every experience shapes you into the leader you are meant to be.
