At WV, we believe that character is that unseen engine that determines how well or otherwise people connect, which can impact the quality of collaboration among team members. Today is another day in the month of May, our "character" month, to be reminded that possessing a good character should be non-negotiable for us as individuals and professionals. Please take some time to watch the attached video. #WVteam #Character

If someone asks you for nothing but time today, SAY YES!! The HOPE Team is built on a mountain of "no's" and a single yes that has allowed monumental social change and access to community-based support as justice-impacted individuals navigate the healthcare system within the Washington Correctional Center for Women. This program was born of women and continues to thrive because of the women incarcerated there. That single yes (watch the clip) has facilitated greater access to services and a platform to discuss new ways of caring for those aging inside. But this is only a starting place; deeper conversations and changes need to be made in how we as a culture systemically view marginal communities' access to basic needs: safe housing, healthy food, and healthcare. These conversations often exclude women and almost always dismiss age as an intersection of oppression. If you have the privilege of obtaining an education, it is your responsibility to use that education to address these issues. As we strive for greater access to higher education, we as a movement cannot ignore the basic needs that education is predicated on. I was humbled to share this space at NCHEP13 with the fantastic women at Washington Correctional Center for Women. I left the first 11 minutes of "setting-up" on this clip because I think it's essential to de-normalize the stigma surrounding kinship within carceral spaces. These ties allow me to thrive post-release, and allow those inside to rewrite what is possible. I also left the follow-up presentation we shared this space with. There is a Q&A section at the end where both groups answered questions. Say yes, and give your time. It matters beyond that single utterance.
