Mastering the art of conversation is an essential skill that all leaders need to cultivate. In this TED Talk, journalist, radio host and author Celeste Headlee shares some absolute gold on how to be a better conversationalist. If you can grab a few minutes, it's well worth a watch. A few tips worth calling out: - Stay open to talking to and hearing from people you don’t necessarily like or agree with; - Enter every conversation assuming you have something to learn; - Above all else and most important of all, stop talking and listen! As leaders, the ability to take a broad perspective on an issue is a necessity. Keeping an open mind and accepting that your perception is not the only way to examine a situation will ultimately enable you to be more considered in your approach and make better, more informed decisions. It will help you be more empathic. It is also a good way to retain a healthy dose of humility and help you learn and ultimately prosper as a leader. The ability to talk less and listen more is, I think, the most important skill any leader can possess and one that many leaders could benefit from improving. It takes effort, mental focus and practise, but dedicating time to honing this skill, should you choose to do so, will be one of the best investments you will ever make.
