60 SECONDS WITH … Janis Balkens Janis Balkens is a Latvian national with over 20 years of experience in leadership, operational and commercial roles in aviation. He has worked extensively with airports, airlines, ground handlers and logistics companies, and most recently, he held the position of Regional Chief Executive Officer for New and Emerging Markets at dnata. Balkens holds an MBA in Aviation from the Danube University Krems and completed executive management programmes at the London Business School and INSEAD. Balkens joined Unilode Aviation Solutions in October 2023 as Chief Operating Officer. How did you get into airfreight/logistics? My dad worked at customs at the airport in the early 90’s and I took a Summer job there when I was 15. Since then I always wanted to come back, and I started with airBaltic in 1996. What quote has most resonated with you? Treat others how you would like to be treated. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Don’t lie. What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done? I can’t disclose it… If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would it be and why? MSC Cruises Company Tolerates Brutal Violence Our honeymoon cruise turned into a nightmare after my dear husband was brutally assaulted on the luxury cruise ship MSC Divina by 10-15 Italian football fans. Despite having visible injuries and filing police reports in both Italy and Finland, MSC Cruises denies the incident ever occurred. The cruise line failed to investigate properly or assist us in any meaningful way. There were four cameras in the area where the attack happened, and hundreds of people witnessed it. I have recorded our conversations with MSC security and the Italian police, which serve as evidence. In these recordings, MSC security admits they saw the violent attack and assured us that the Italian police would handle it. However, the Italian police did not take up the matter, leaving us helpless. Afterward MSC Cruises denied everything. Despite the clear evidence and the presence of numerous witnesses, they refused to take responsibility. In what kind of world are we living when such violence is accepted and goes unpunished? Emphasize the industry's technological advancements, showcasing the integration of artificial intelligence, automation, and data analysis. This not only attracts the tech-savvy younger generation but also positions the maritime sector as innovative and forward-thinking, mitigating the inevitable decrease in the number of human resources employed. Develop comprehensive school and onboard training programs that bridge the gap between traditional maritime skills and the growing demands of the industry. Offering certifications in emerging technologies and leadership development can make maritime careers more attractive. Acknowledge the desire for a balance between professional and personal life. Implement definite onboarding periods, opportunities, and family-friendly policies to make maritime careers more appealing, especially for those who might come from commercial environments not strictly tied to the cruise industry. Permanently eliminate the farcical!! contract that pays maritime professionals only when onboard. Legally strengthen the figure of the Captain, removing the numerous!! interpretations between navigation codes and civil and criminal codes. It's time to transform the perception of maritime leadership from a relic of the past to a dynamic and promising career choice.
