MLK Day is So Much More Than I Have a Dream: Many of us are looking forward to a three-day weekend, with many being off Monday for MLK Day. While extra days off are always welcome, I challenge you to think about ways you might honor and cel ebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. How can you expand the ways you view MLK's work beyond the mainstream “I Have a Dream” speech? Here are 5 ways you can actively celebrate MLK Day: 1. Volunteer in your community. All across the country, schools, non-profits, food pantries, etc., are seeking volunteers. Often you volunteer in shifts, making it easy to coordinate around your schedule and give back to the community that nurtures you. 2. Make intentional time to brainstorm ways you can be of service to others in 2024 and beyond. Is there an organization whose mission you love? Reach out, and see if there are ways to get involved. Do you have a special skill set (i.e., marketing, graphic design, accounting)? Often times smaller community-based organizations are underfunded and could use extra hands. There are many levels of involvement, and each one of them is important. 3. Talk about MLK with friends, family, and loved ones. Share what inspires you about the work he was able to accomplish and how you might embody those principles in your own life. 4. Expand your view of Dr. King's work. We all know the infamous I Have a Dream Speech, but have you read or listened to any of his other work? It’s also important to remember the Civil Rights movement was and is larger than just Martin Luther King Jr. Do your research and begin to paint a fuller picture of what key players have been, what they’ve accomplished, and where we still need to go. 5. Do not limit your celebration of Dr. King’s legacy to one day. We all need to collectively do the work every day if we want to see Dr. King’s dream realized. Remember, there are big and small ways to do this, but it all starts with you. So what are you going to do? #martinlutherkingjr #mlkday2024 #deib #ihaveadream

Excited to be part of a meaningful initiative! 🌟 Volunteering my time to review resumes and guide our youth in the right direction. 📄 As we review these resumes, we're not just looking at the words on paper but thinking about how we can best represent their unique talents and potential. 💪✨ Even when we come across resumes unrelated to our field, we don't turn away. We offer structural feedback and refer to the format guide provided. It's all about nurturing growth and helping young talents thrive. 🌱 Let's empower the next generation together. 🚀 #YouthDevelopment #ResumeReview #Volunteering #Empowerment

🌍 Exploring the wisdom of Desmond Tutu and the essence of Ubuntu in co-operatives and non-profit strategy. 🤝 Our humanity is deeply intertwined, and Tutu's words resonate with the philosophy that our true selves emerge through relationships. In the realm of communal living, shared experiences, and mutual support, Tutu underscores the significance of acknowledging our interdependence. 🌱 This resonates strongly in movements for justice and equality, as seen in South Africa's struggle against apartheid. As I delve into movement building and address power imbalances, the quest for knowledge intensifies. 💡 People-powered work is at the core, and I'm curious: How do you maintain energy and foster sustainable structures in your endeavors? Let's exchange insights! 🚀 #UbuntuPhilosophy #MovementBuilding #SocialJustice #CollaborationInAction

Giving of your time is so valuable! Current estimates of the dollar value of volunteered time range from $179 billion per year to more than twice that. Beyond the dollar value of your time and talents, it is impossible to put a price on kindness, care, and compassion.

🔍 As a passionate advocate for community growth and non-profit leadership, an article from the Pew Research Center on the state of trust in America caught my eye, and I believe it's crucial for those of us working towards stronger, more cohesive societies. ✨ **Main Idea:** The research reveals significant divides in trust towards various institutions and social groups in the U.S. Notably, the military, small businesses, and the police enjoy relatively high trust levels, whereas Congress, the federal government, and television news see low trust levels. This polarization is increasingly aligned with political ideologies, influencing community cohesion and the effectiveness of collective action. 💬 **Personal Reflection:** In my own experience working with non-profit organizations, the bond of trust between the community and our institution forms the bedrock of successful projects. Once, amidst a particularly divisive local issue, our organization's transparent and consistent communication helped rebuild community trust, which reminded me of the paramount importance of trust in achieving communal objectives. 📊 **Engagement Elements:** - **Questions:** How do you see the role of trust in your professional or community activities? Have you noticed changes over the years? - **Statistics:** Only 31% of Americans in 2019 felt that most people could be trusted, down from 64% in 1993. - **Call to Action:** Share your experiences or thoughts on rebuilding trust in our institutions and communities. 💬 Style and Tone: Motivational and inspiring, aiming to provoke thought and encourage active discussion on rebuilding trust. 🔑 Hashtags/Keywords: #CommunityDevelopment #NonProfitLeadership #TrustInAmerica #PewResearch #SocialCohesion In this increasingly polarized environment, how can we as leaders and activists foster trust and unity? Let's discuss! 🌍✨ #CommunityTrust #Leadership #SocialImpact #KirkMayes https://lnkd.in/dUuftx58
