Today, The National Academy of Sciences hosted the extraordinary educational event in Washington DC “Ukrainian-American Partnership in Education and Science: Stronger Together." The event was truly enjoyable and inspiring, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the shared commitment to advancing education and science between Ukraine and the United States. With keynote speaker First Lady Olena Zelenska, this event also aimed to spread Ukrainian culture, science, and history in the USA. It highlighted the opportunity to build stronger connections between schools, universities, and scientific laboratories in both countries. This event was organized by Embassy of Ukraine in the USA / Посольство України в США, The National Academy Of Sciences, the Ukrainian Institute, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ukraine House, the Foundation of the President of Ukraine, and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. 🇺🇸🇺🇦 Heartfelt thanks and compliments to Katja Smagliy for her exceptional moderation and the curation of compelling and important panel discussion topics!

📢 On the Science Day in Ukraine, the National Research Foundation of Ukraine held an information event ‘Integration of Ukraine into the Global Research Area’ Researchers, innovators, representatives of the government, the Verkhovna Rada, business, research foundations and organizations from Ukraine and other countries took part in the discussion on research funding; advocacy of researchers' interests in Ukraine and abroad; recognition of researchers in the global research area, as well as grant opportunities for researchers. 📲 For more information about what became a ‘lifesaver’ for many Ukrainian researchers during the war, why our researchers will joint the European Union a little faster than the rest of the country, why Ukraine is called a ‘European tiger’, and what other significant event took place during the information event please follow the link: https://cutt.ly/VetkeX5A

ONE YEAR OF WAR IN UKRAINE: EXPLORING THE IMPACT ON THE SCIENCE SECTOR AND SUPPORTING INITIATIVES 📍 The second conference on the Ukraine crisis, held in March 2023, one year after the start of the full-scale assault on Ukraine and its people, engaged with the insights and recommendations that emerged from the previous conference held in June 2022. It sought to place them in the broader context of how and why the international science system and research community can show solidarity in times of crisis. The speakers told of the appalling and indiscriminate damage inflicted upon Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, its cultural, educational and research facilities – but also of the resilient response of the Ukrainian scientific and academic community. The fundamental point to emerge from the conference is that if science is for the global common good and a shared endeavour that transcends borders, then it is incumbent upon the global scientific community to stand in solidarity with our colleagues in times of crisis. This solidarity must be respectful of local agency, and it must be offered in a spirit of partnership and cooperation. This conference report that highlights the impact and responses to date, including a review of the recommendation put forward in the June 2022 conference. 📝 Read the Full Report 👉 https://lnkd.in/dwFNZSWr 📝 Read the Executive Summary 👉 https://lnkd.in/dSR_v3A7

The European Commission awarded €580k to EU research diasporas in the UK to CONNECTS-UK, of which DANinUK is part. Together with our fellow European colleagues, we are the first pan-European platform in the UK aimed at fostering scientific collaborations between the EU and the UK. The UK's exit from posed new challenges for international research such as uncertainty in funding, mobility & joint projects. The associations of European scientists and researchers in with @NativeScientist, have joined forces to create @CONNECTS_UK (See twitter https://lnkd.in/eSmkbgeH) Our main aim is to strengthen scientific communities in through 4 objectives: Establish a network of researchers in the UK Analyse our communities and scientific relationships Advocate for relations and provide advice Develop science outreach programmes CONNECTS UK aims to establish itself as a staple in modern scientific diplomacy using the strong foundations of its members, which have been supporting relations for over 15 years and have connections with academic and political institutions in the UK and the EU. The European Commission support will give new impetus to promoting common values and achievements at a larger scale. The €580k of funding will contribute towards growing our networks, undertaking research, providing science-policy advice, and communicating science to younger audiences.

📢 Last week during #RIDaysEU 🙋♀️ Ewa Kocinska-Lange took part in a panel discussion on “R&I in Times of Reconstruction: How R&I Can Help Rebuild Ukraine”. It was moderated by Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General of DG RTD European Commission, with participation of: Viola von Cramon-Taubadel - MEP | European Parliament Serhiy Tereshko - Deputy Head of Mission of Ukraine to the EU Vaughan Turekian - Executive Director Policy and Global Affairs Division | The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine T Kyosuke Inada - Chief Representative for Europe and Head, France Office | Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) ⏳ Signe Ratso summed up the last 2 years since Russia started unjustified aggression against Ukraine where at least 35% of research infrastructure has been either damaged or destroyed and Ukraine scientists were relocated within the country or abroad. In response, the European Commission supports Ukraine by: ➡️ signing 85 grants so far with UA participation in #HorizonEU; ➡️ Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions supporting 125 displaced Ukrainian researchers; ➡️ providing access to the European research infrastructure; ➡️ opening Horizon Europe Office in Kyiv providing training and facilitating integration into the European Research Area; ➡️ the EIC for Ukraine action supporting at least 200 Ukrainian deep tech startups with grants and technical assistance. In the panel discussion, Ewa highlighted some of the lessons learned from Polish-Ukrainian R&I cooperation from the last 2 years: 🔸 adapt to the current needs of Ukraine and current global issues; 🔸 keep developing cooperation with the Ukrainian research community; 🔸 increase Ukrainian participation in Horizon EU and research networks; 🔸 build the expert base to support the R&I community; 🔸 offer study visits, online courses, and exchanges; 🔸 support the reconstruction of R&I infrastructure; 🔸 support involvement of Ukrainian universities in the European University alliances; 🔸 retain the affiliation of Ukrainian researchers with Ukrainian institutions. As one of the current examples presenting international support Ewa pointed out the Call IMPRESS-U announced in cooperation between researchers from Poland, Ukraine, the USA and the Baltic states 🌐 We need to remember that supporting human capital is crucial for the future of Ukraine and its reconstruction.

#germany 🇩🇪 #networking HUMBOLDT4UKRAINE: Online Networking Forum Since the outbreak of the brutal war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has been supporting almost 150 Ukrainian researchers who found academic shelter in Germany or continue working in Ukraine. Moreover, as a member of the EU-funded MSCA4Ukraine Consortium we enable 125 MSCA4Ukraine fellows to continue their research in 21 countries in Europe. However, many of the diverse emergency support programmes rolled out by different funding organisations and universities are now expiring. Thus, it is imperative to develop a more systemic, coordinated, and long-term approach to provide sustainable support both to the displaced researchers and to the Ukrainian science system as a whole. We invite all Ukrainian researchers currently working in Germany, Ukraine and elsewhere, as well as members of the broader academic community, to join us for a digital networking forum. https://lnkd.in/eDc74nYr #ScienceForUkraine 🇺🇦
