Founder Lesson #4: How to Properly Nail an ICP (Top 3 lessons learned and a common mistake)
Last summer, Dan Robinson and I we're really trying to focus on who we were targeting.
We thought by narrowing it down to a job title and an industry was enough.
While this can be enough for a well-established company, as a startup, it's important to get so familiar with your customers that your messages strike them in the heart every time they see your company.
Our initial messages really hit home with our customers, but we didn't know why they wanted it. Because of this, we weren't generating enough pain to have them make the decision to go with us.
We tried too much to find their TV shows instead of figuring out what they actually wanted in their jobs.
Trying to get all of the metrics like what they eat for breakfast every morning is not important. The reason people push for that is because they want you to dive into what they are thinking every day.
Here are the top three things I learned on how to resonate with my customers properly:
1. Know Their Goals
What part of work gets them out of bed every day? What are the metrics they're trying to hit? Why do they care? How can they excel at their job?
2. Know Their Fears
What keeps them up at night? What are they afraid of losing? What don't they think they can acheive?
3. Know Their Sources
Where do they get their info? What media do they use? What would work best, ads, social media marketing, SEO, etc...?
Once you've got a handle on these three things, you pretty much have all you need to make a successful marketing message AND you'll know how to talk to them in your sales meetings.
Happy Founding!
