As you begin your hump day on this 1st of November, also remember to celebrate Black Entrepreneurs Day today. Black Entrepreneurs Day is a diversity and inclusion-based event that tries to highlight and celebrate small businesses. How often do Black business fail: The Bureau of Labor statistics consistently reports a third of new businesses close within their first two years and half exit within their first five years — for Black businesses the margin is even slimmer. Eight of 10 Black-owned businesses fail within the first 18 months, according to a Bloomberg report. What are the struggles of Black-owned businesses: A majority of Black owners identified raising capital (40%) and growing their business (21%) as their top challenge, outweighing other common challenges such as marketing, customer acquisition, and hiring. How can you support Black owned businesses: Start with visibility. Invest in their product or service. Be intentional and share with your social circle. Write and share a review. As you begin planning and budgeting for 2024, I urge you to consider these questions: Who will you engage for support as Key Notes for speaking engagements? Where do you order your supplies/materials and are they minority owned? What organizations do you partner with (i.e. recruiting firms, marketing partners, photographers, food service, etc.) and are they minority owned? Have you worked with your local Chamber of Commerce to connect with the minority owned businesses in your community that offer the products/services you need? Is it time to revisit who and how you are investing/gifting in your community? I guess my overarching message is....Supplier Diversity is foundational to supporting Black and other minority owned businesses.
