Right now, the Tech industry is going through yet another round of layoffs, and I genuinely feel for everyone affected. Iโve been where you are.
The first time I was let go, I didnโt see it coming. I was young, and my self-confidence and self-worth were hit really hard. I thought I was doing a brilliant job, putting in the hours building my skills, and my clients liked me.

The second time, I should have seen it coming. Taking a bit more interest in how companies are run, forecasts, cash flow, market conditions, and win rates would have told me that the whole company was about to go โpopโ. The second time, I was mentally better prepared and knew I had marketable skills that would eventually get me another job.

The third time, I was glad it happened! It still hurt; I still had a mental โwobbleโ but needed a push. Iโd stagnated and needed a crisis to transition me into the next part of my career. What happened next was the best, most fulfilling thing Iโve ever done, and Iโm still doing it now.

I now look at ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ โ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒโ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฎ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฟ; most of us will end up being laid off at least once.
Iโve been in Tech for well over 35 years, and when I talk to other Tech veterans, theyโve almost always had a job โtransitionโ thatโs actually been a layoff or a RIF (Reduction In Force); itโs just that theyโve hidden it in their LinkedIn profile. Maybe we should all be more open about how often layoffs happen.
Being laid off hurts; it's completely natural to question yourself, but the fact is you still have the same desirable and valuable skill set you had before you were laid off; you are still the same person and other employers will see that.
