Today is a BIG day for Remake and the voices challenging fashion's status quo. You can now stream the new viral documentary- Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion on HBO. Without sharing spoilers, one thing is clear-The Brandy Hellville documentary represents the exploitation & abuse of women at every step in the fashion system. Fashion is a feminist issue - women in the supply chain face abuse across the fashion system: from the Brandy Melville retail worker and consumer, to the women who make the product and deal with fashion’s waste streams. Meanwhile, men at the top continue to profit off of an industry that was built on the backs of women in racist and colonial systems. Remake is here to change that. When I speak, I love to wear a great wrap dress. Especially one from the legendary Diane Von Furstenberg who created the iconic dress. 💃🏻 As a designer, she was a trailblazer in the fashion world… and so much more. To be clear, I’m not reposting to talk about the film - haven’t seen it and don’t have opinions on it, yet. I’m reposting for the last line of the clip - giving women more than a ‘tight rope’ of space ‘to negotiate how to be….’ - that just hit me, resonated so boldly and so spot on accurately. All marginalized people can feel that deeply; the sense of only having a tight rope of space to negotiate your worth, how you should be, etc. That very specific, clear visualization (with a visceral emotional reaction that pairs with it) and claim for space to ‘negotiate’, have the power to go hand in hand to force for the broadening - the increasing - of space for safe and legimized negotiation to feel more like o creation of a future state better than before🔥. Space for professionals who make people uncomfortable when holding accountability for change to be able to negotiate for more space in corporate America for the benefit of the whole - the evolution of what could be. Beyond the Cowboy: #Redefining #Masculinity "Researcher: Do you find this packaging masculine enough?" "Respondent: What do you mean by #masculine?" This unexpected question during a concept-testing research was a pivotal moment, a realization that dawned on our client – a brand long celebrated for its embodiment of the #cowboy and the quintessential “man’s man.” The world's understanding of masculinity was evolving, challenging them to delve deeper into the heart of society's changing dynamics. Embarking on a #qualitative #exploration, we engaged in heartfelt #conversations with individuals across the spectrum of society - conservative, liberal, gay, straight, young, old, women, and transgender. Each discussion was a new, enriching #perspective on the evolving masculine #archetype, pushing us to uncover the aspirational #identities that resonate with today's society. We met Mike, the Kind Rebel, who is not afraid to play with makeup and nail polish to express his fluid identity. There's Steve, the Challenged Provider, who grapples with having a wife who earns more than him. And then Dave, the Modern Protector, who, after transitioning from female to male, understood the weight of the intimidating presence that men have on women and wanted to create safer, more inclusive spaces where women feel seen, heard, and respected. A new book titled “Glossy” was just published, and it chronicles the rise and fall of an era-defining company and gives a fascinating portrait of one of the most prolific female CEOs of the last decade. Emily Weiss pioneered the brand in 2014 and was revered for her ability to catapult it into a billion-dollar venture with little to no prior work experience. That is, until she stepped down. Why would she forfeit her position at the pinnacle of glossier success? When being a "girlboss" became extremely popular in the 2010s, Weiss was glorified for her role as the head of such a successful brand by a woman for other women, which is why glossier flaws were overlooked for so long. Until the cracks in the cult of the “girlboss” movement started to show. Glossier is a very Gen Z-forward brand, meaning inclusivity is non-negotiable.
