As we inch close to the start of one of the biggest festivals of Bengal, Kolkata and India, the festival of Durga Puja, wanted to pen down some thoughts on the event which is very close to my heart ( haven’t missed any pujas in Kolkata though have stayed outside the city for major part of my life) It’s a very common story for someone from the city that it’s slow and not at par with other Tier 1s in terms of industrial and economic activity, but this week long celebration is something which all of us collectively feel extremely proud of Close to 40,000 pujas (driven by localities of the city )across the state of Bengal, with close to 3,000 just in Kolkata, the festival provides direct and indirect employment opportunities to 3 lakh people from the state as the preparations start three to four months in advance. Goes without saying sectors such as retail, hospitality, tourism, consumer goods, Qsr all look forward to this time of the year which presents a plethora of opportunities. In terms of export of idols, the local artisans and their craft gets a much needed boost (close to 150 idols were sent abroad just in 2021) to cater to the huge non resident Bengali Indian community globally Living in Bangalore and being a witness to the traffic woes of the city, I really feel proud of the traffic management efforts of Kolkata traffic police. For a period of ten days, close to 3,000 traffic personnel manage the streets tirelessly as the entire city lits up in the festive mood day and night. This itself can be a case study of urban planning and management for many of our Tier 1s which receive global investments A festival which is now a world heritage site and where for a period of 10 days the divides of class, religion and communities collapse, this is still a big testament of the cultural practices of this country and a matter of pride for all of us. #durgapuja #kolkata #traffic #beingpositive

This beauty is a Durga Puja pandal from Kolkata. A festival worth 4.5 billion dollars. Durga Puja is such a big deal in Kolkata that the festival makes up about 2.6% of West Bengal's total income. The time of the year which invokes crores of government expenditure. In fact many studies show that Bengal's arts and crafts industry is thriving on the basis of the festival alone. Streets are full of life, Kolkata becomes a night city for 5 days straight. The cultural aspect behind the Durga Puja is surely worthy of being recognized by UNESCO. However the economics of the festival are absolutely mind boggling. Fun fact: air traffic into West Bengal increases by 11% during the pujo months! It is impossible to grasp the sheer scale of the festival without a visit to West Bengal. The craftsmanship alone is enough to make most individuals stare in awe. Finally, to answer the million dollar question: No, maximum logoko office se leave nahi milta 😂.
