What is your course of study, Food Science and Technology ma/sir...oh so you must know how to cook very well right? What is your job title in your company, quality control officer sir/ma Ehn ehn waoh your course has to do with that too! this is so new but if I'm to guess what you do, you control the quality of what you feed us right? To a layman... but I would love to buttress more so you can have a complete overview of what quality control officers do. 1️⃣ Quality control officers monitors the quality aspect of both the incoming raw materials and the final product to be shipped. The food produced has a standard operating procedures they must meet and we ensure these standards are not compromised or neglected. 2️⃣ Quality control officers monitor the production phase at various levels of production, we leave no stone unturned because whatever we do has an effect on our consumers well being. 3️⃣ Quality control officers do their best to ensure they reduce the chances of failure in production and also reduce quality related issues. 4️⃣ We inspect, test and measure material to ensure it's safe and wholesome. We also ensure ingredients are measured according to the organizational standards while documenting the inspection process. 5️⃣ We recommend adjustments to the production line and assembly process 6️⃣ We conduct organoleptic tests on products produced all to ensure consumers get optimum satisfaction. To cut the long talk sir/ma we ensure our consumers get unrestricted access to safe and wholesome food. Did you just call me a chef? Well that's a topic for another day. LinkedIn asked me: What advice would you give someone who is thinking of pursuing a career in #QualityAssurance? ✏️ My answer: 1️⃣Learn the most basic things in the particular industry you are working in whether food & beverage, drugs, etc. Know the right terminologies, understand the product, unit operations, the production process, the machinery, etc. Ask questions - the process owners, engineers and your colleagues in quality to understand the food safety and quality specifications (customer & regulatory) of the products that your organisation have in their portfolio. 2️⃣ Being a BSc or MSc holder doesn't mean that your days of learning is over. You must keep adding one or more blocks of knowledge to your knowledge bank. Consider taking free or paid certifications in relevant areas like food safety & quality. At the right time, this knowledge will come in handy and set you up for career growth. 3️⃣ Be up-to-date with the latest trends in the food industry. The industry is a fast-paced one trying to meet up with the ever-changing needs of consumers. By any means necessary, stay up to date. The internet can help with that. 4️⃣ Being in quality assurance adds extra level of responsibility to you as you will be validating the safety and quality of food that a lot of people will consume on a daily basis. You must pay attention to detail. There is no room for carelessness here. You must be detailed and analytical. 5️⃣ You will need to communicate your findings to your line manager or other stakeholders. Effective communication skills (written and verbal) will be helpful. As you communicate also learn to listen actively to help you understand and learn faster. 6️⃣ Documentation is your evidence that a task was performed. As Burna Boy would say, "you go explain tire without evidence". Always document reports from analyses, inspections, audits, and day-to-day operations in the shift. It'll save you one day. 7️⃣ Being in quality assurance does not make you a policeman or woman. You must collaborate with other colleagues in production, engineering, packaging, regulatory, research & development, etc to proffer solutions to manufacturing challenges. 8️⃣ Be proactive, flexible and learn to make decisions quickly in the heat of unexpected manufacturing challenges because every day brings its own unique challenge. 9️⃣ Develop your people skills. You can't avoid people in this line of work. You must learn to manage people according to their unique behaviour for work to move smoothly. 🔟 You need a high level of passion for quality to thrive in this role. Several situations may test you to compromise your standards but your passion and dedication which led you to the field of quality assurance will sustain you on the gloomy days. Let's have a throwback because it's Thursday 😊 Most times I have lots of thoughts in my head but the problem is putting them out... Just the other day I was thinking about the first day I heard about the word quality control and quality assurance. It was during my Intern year which was in 2019. I remember that year when I joined newly, my supervisor (Temitope Aduroja ) would have a class with me and the next thing assignments 😅. And as a good student, I will bombard my notes with stories 😎. One of the numerous assignments was differentiating between a Quality Control officer and a Quality Assurance officer. I know this is not new to some people but we still confuse them. Sometimes it is not people's fault, it is just the Job description 🤷 These two officers play distinct yet COMPLEMENTARY roles in ensuring the safety and quality of food products in the industry... "Read again and take note of the word in capital letters" Below are some specific examples that I have prepared to illustrate the differences between a quality control officer and a quality assurance officer in the food industry: Responsibilities ✨ - Q.C.O.: Conducting visual inspections and sensory evaluations of finished food products to ensure they meet established quality standards. For instance, a quality control officer may inspect packaged biscuits for proper appearance, texture, and taste. - Q.A.O.: Developing and implementing HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) plans to prevent food contamination throughout the production process. For example, a quality assurance officer might design and oversee the implementation of a plan to prevent cross-contamination between raw and cooked ingredients in a food processing facility. Scope✨ - Q.C.O.: Conducting periodic checks on production equipment to ensure they are calibrated and functioning properly. For example, a quality control officer might routinely calibrate temperature probes in ovens to ensure accurate baking temperatures. - Q.A.O.: Implementing supplier quality management programs to ensure that raw materials and ingredients meet specified quality standards before they are used in production. For instance, a quality assurance officer might establish criteria for evaluating the quality of incoming produce from suppliers and conduct regular audits to verify compliance. What else did I miss?
