Wetherspoons has reported that Like-for-like sales increased by 5.2% in the 13 weeks to 28 April 2024, compared to the same period last year. The company reports that year-to-date (YTD) like-for-like sales increased by 8.3%. JDW adds that, due to a reduced number of units, total sales increased by 3.3% in the quarter and by 6.5% YTD. The company clarifies that ‘the last week of the period last year included a bank holiday weekend, whereas this year the bank holiday was a week later. Excluding that week, like-for-like sales for the first 12 weeks of the period increased by 6.0%.’ This being a quarterly update, there is no mention of margins.

Turnover at The Good Guys fell 2.2 per cent last month, with same-store sales down the same figure. Better said by AFR Barrenjoey: "FY24 profit expectations were so low at JB Hi-Fi that even a 20 per cent miss at the profit line was ahead of forecasts. But what were JB Hi-Fi shares doing already at a fresh high if the market was thinking profit would be more than 20 per cent down? Of course that is where interest rate cuts and stage three cuts come in. If you believe both are coming (and plenty of people do), then the usually bankable JB Hi-Fi’s sales, EBITDA and all-important earnings per share should hit new heights in FY25 and FY26." It's all about expectations and managing them in this market, and a proven quality retailer like JB Hi Fi helps manage these expectations, The share uplift really didn't reflect results per se, they reflected expectations of future performance. In the latest Existing-Home Sales report from NAR, December 2023 brought 3.78 million in sales, a median sales price of $382,600, and 3.2 months of inventory. The median sales price is up 4.4% year-over-year, and inventory was up 0.3 months from December 2022.

Here's a recap of January 2024! 🐝 The City of Regina reported 179 sales in January, a Y/Y gain of over 35% and 25% above long-term trends. 🐝 New listing growth in January was not enough to offset strong monthly sales, as inventory levels dipped by nearly 19% Y/Y and remained over 33% below the 10-year average. 🐝 The benchmark price was $301,900 in January, up from $299,800 in December and nearly 2% below January 2023.

Edahn Golan It is interesting to note that an unintended consequence of the price compression is that the wholesale prices of LGD on a per carat basis for different sizes is not significant as the size increases. Your graph did not show the larger 3 4 5 carats. Garry Holloway had pointed out previously that price per carat for LGD should decrease as the size goes up due to set up costs etc. it would seem logical for LGD wholesalers would take the initiative now to get off the illogical Rapaport pricing for LGD. I believe that there will be a shift to higher quality LGD and higher quality cuts as prices comes down but since these drops have not been passed on to the end consumers the US remains a price sensitive market. I think this is a disservice to the end consumers but if the retailers can maintain higher margins and not alienate the consumers it is their commercial judgement. It is natural to maximise profits. I know it is not intentional but perhaps we can focus on the positive of lower LGD prices. In most other product categories lower prices can translate into larger demand and greater market penetration so “erosion” can be framed as greater affordability. Also I look forward to claims that some growers are manufacturing better quality LGD such as Lusix can be substantiated. From a consumer point of view why not buy better LGD with superior light performance for a reasonable premium ? A LGD is forever too.
