Along this journey, I uncovered some enlightening facts and insights regarding the value chain of electronic manufacturing and the promising trajectory of the EMS sector in India. Let's dive into the value chain of the electronics manufacturing sector: Insights on the Electronic Manufacturing Sector Value Chain: Maximizing Value: Within the value chain, OEMs wield considerable power due to their strong brand presence, capturing the lion's share of value. Traditional EMS Approach: EMS companies predominantly operate through the conventional box build method, encompassing component sourcing, assembly, testing, and packaging (commonly referred to as FATP - Final Assembly Testing & Packing). Profit Discrepancy: Despite handling the majority of activities, EMS companies typically experience the lowest profit margins within the value chain. OEM Dominance: OEMs exert significant bargaining power through activities such as R&D, product design, supplier selection, distribution, marketing, sales, and after-sales service. Ultimately, branding serves as the linchpin of their influence. Shift Towards ODM: Recognizing this dynamic, EMS companies are gradually transitioning towards ODM (Original Design Manufacturers). In this model, ODMs not only manufacture but also design customized products tailored to customer specifications, thereby adding substantial value to the chain. Rapid Growth in India: The share of EMS outsourced to India has witnessed a remarkable surge over the years, escalating from 15% in 2016 to 25% in 2023. Projections indicate a further increase to over 40% by 2030, propelled largely by favorable shifts in government policies. Six Toyota Production Lines Halted By Supply Chain Disruptions On June 20, 2024, Toyota Motor announced it would suspend operations on six production lines at five of its plants in Japan due to a parts shortage. According to a spokesperson, the automaker plans to determine on June 21 whether production can resume. The demand for aluminum in Japan's automotive sector may decline following Toyota's suspension of production, sales, and shipments of three models due to a certification investigation. Similarly, Mazda has reportedly halted the shipment of two models that are currently in production. The automotive industry is Japan's largest consumer of aluminum, using 1,653,800 tonnes, or 43.8% of the nation's total aluminum demand of 3,771,300 tonnes in 2023, as the Japan Aluminium Association reported.
