July is Cord Blood Awareness Month. Did you know that a valuable source of stem cells is cord blood, which is taken from the umbilical cord following childbirth? Stem cells are special cells that can develop into other cell types that do different things. Patients and their families may find hope in these stem cells, as they can be used to treat a variety of illnesses including cancer and immune disorders. Cord blood can be given to more types of people and is less likely to be rejected by the recipient’s body.
Cord blood is easier and less risky to collect.
Cord blood can be stored until it is needed whereas bone marrow must be used soon after collection.
