Just wrapped up an inspiring day at SUSTAINABILITY LIVE. There were three standout moments for me. The first was listening to Rhian Kelly, Chief Sustainability Director, National Grid, commit to a clean, far, and affordable energy future. Rhian comes from a communications background and her emphasis on the importance of storytelling in appealing to diverse stakeholders – colleagues, investors, policymakers etc. – is something that truly resonated. It has long been my view that effective and targeted communication is key to advancing sustainability and it was pleasing to see this realised in the room.   The panel on electric vehicles (EVs) was a good one. Martin Kochman, ⚡ Sam Clarke ⚡, and Peter Gallagher - representing Hitachi, GRIDSERVE Sustainable Energy Limited, and Extreme E, respectively - discussed critical subjects such as government policy, charging infrastructure, and range anxiety. The journey to electrify transport in the UK has been a bumpy one – and clearly obstacles remain; not least the undying misleading putdowns from our tabloid media – but the prevailing sense in the room was one of positivity. However, my personal highlight of the event was the panel featuring Sven Wiltink, Beccy Speight, Matt Bell, and Steve Smith – representing Radisson Hotel Group, RSPB, Heatherwick Studio, and Schneider Electric, respectively. It was Matt Bell who really made me sit up and pay attention through his assertion that culture is the missing part of the puzzle when it comes to winning the battle against climate change. Matt spoke about engaging creatives to drive required behavioural changes at both the micro and macro level – amongst individuals and organisations at large. It is time to shift the conversation from obsessing on the science to make room for creatives. This is how we can inspire lasting change.
