There may be hardly anyone in the country, who hasn't watched or atleast heard of S.S. Rajamouli's epic 'Bahubali'.
At its core, the narrative revolves around Bahubali, the beloved prince renowned for his valor and competence, traits acknowledged even by his mother and the Queen, Shivgami.
Bahubali's popularity with the people rendered his brother, Bhallaldev, incapable of rivaling his stature. Thus, Bhallaldev sought to secure the throne by eliminating Bahubali from contention. Aware that outright regicide would breed resentment, Bhallaldev orchestrated a scheme to manipulate Shivgami into unwittingly dispatching her own son.
This Machiavellian intrigue, while fictional, resonates with real-world dynamics.
When assigning culpability for this tragedy, it's tempting to lay the blame solely at Bhallaldev's feet. However, Shivgami's lack of effective governance and oversight also warrants scrutiny. She failed to establish adequate checks and balances, thereby enabling manipulation that ultimately led to the kingdom's downfall.
In a broader context, effective leadership entails accommodating diverse perspectives, including those of both a Bahubali and a Bhallaldev. The onus lies on the leader to resist manipulation and ensure the integrity of their team. This necessitates making decisions based on comprehensive analysis and data, rather than succumbing to personal biases or intuition. By adopting a holistic approach to governance, leaders can safeguard against the pitfalls of manipulation and preserve the strength of their team.
