Roger Federer gave an endearing Commencement Address at Dartmouth earlier this month. But one thing he said really stood out as useful advice for everyone... As he recounted his tennis career as the long time number one ranked player in the world, he cited two important statistics: • He won nearly 80% of his 1,526 singles matches. • But to win those matches, he only won 54% of his points. He went on to emphasize the importance of being fully committed to each point, to each small step on your journey. But, once that moment has passed, move on quickly and prepare for the next one. Over time, you can rack up a large slate of wins even when often losing points along the way. Stay focused, keep trying, and have a short memory for the ones that got away. #Leadership #PersonalDevelopment #Management

I'd been hearing so much about Roger Federer’s recent graduation speech at Dartmouth. I took the time to listen to it. I discovered it was a master class about how empowering it is to let go and move on. Three of my favorite quotes from Federer’s speech: · “Become a master at overcoming hard moments.” · “When you lose every second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot.” · “You can work harder than you thought possible and still lose.” True growth involves embracing change and moving forward. These are two of the most important skills to learn as a leader, and yet without a doubt two of the hardest to master. Federer’s speech reminded me of one of my favorite quotes by Paulo Coelho - and one that I've reflected on many times in my own life: · “I think it’s important to realize you can miss something and not want it back.” Holding on to past mistakes or being unwilling to recognize a strategy isn’t working keeps us from exploring new approaches. Life is a series of wins and losses – it’s never one or the other for very long. Adaptability is everything. Having clear understanding that not everything can be controlled is one of the most important qualities a leader can embrace. I call it ‘writing on a sheet of blank paper.’ Whether in work or life, learning to let go leads to new opportunities, fresh perspectives and personal growth. #resilience #persistence #evolution #growth

Sage advice from Roger Federer's commencement address at Dartmouth University. While he offers countless gems of wisdom throughout the speech, this part really stuck with me. Speaking from a tennis context, he eloquently explains the importance of focus, acceptance and adaptability. 🎯"When you’re playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world. And it is. But when it's behind you, it’s behind you." This philosophy extends far beyond the tennis court. In our professional and personal lives, we often face critical moments that demand our utmost attention and dedication. However, once these moments pass, it's crucial to move forward without dwelling on past successes or setbacks. This ability to focus intensely on the present, accept the outcome, and adapt to what comes next is key to continuous growth and resilience. Leadership in Every Stroke: Lessons from Roger Federer at Dartmouth College I had the pleasure of watching a video of Roger Federer, the tennis legend and former World No. 1, deliver a memorable commencement speech at Dartmouth College recently. His words were not only inspiring but also deeply resonant, particularly for those of us striving to be better leaders and professionals. Federer emphasized the crucial role of clarity and focus in achieving success. In a world full of distractions, maintaining a clear vision and unwavering focus can make all the difference. Leadership examples are all around us - if we are open to them! I've always been a fan of tennis. Back in the day - a long long time ago - I used to play five or six hours a day. The recent US Open was showcased the best players in the world in some of the most amazing matches of our time. If you love tennis, these two weeks were a dream. And if you were looking for a lesson in leadership, the US Open had that as well. The level of gratitude and recognition, particularly for many who often remain in the background and are never mentioned or recognized, was a lesson of each of us in a leadership position. Are we taking the time to recognize each and every person who has contributed to achieving a goal? Or do we just recognize the 'usual suspects?' #leadership #leadershipexcellence #gratitude #recognition #culturematters #peopleandculture #healthcareconsulting #executivesearch

Dartmouth College hit a winner (pun intended!) when they invited Roger Federer to speak at their graduation ceremony a few days ago. In his 25-minute address, he provides 3 "tennis lessons" that all of us can use: 1. "𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀" 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝘆𝘁𝗵. The ones who make a task look easy have worked the hardest to develop their skills. Usually, this work is done in the shadows with no one watching. 2. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁. He says that even though he won 80% of the matches he played, he won just 54% of the points in those matches. He said that we need to be completely engaged in the moment ... and once the moment passes, it's in the past. Don't dwell on the past, but instead stay engaged in the present. 3. 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁. He wanted to serve others, so he set up a foundation early in his career. That foundation has helped 3 million children to receive an education and has helped train 55,000 teachers. These "tennis lessons" apply in our professional lives. Think about you and your team: • How are you working to make what you - or your team members - do look effortless? • To help your team to stay engaged in the present and not dwell on the past? • To serve others? Federer delivered a powerful address that is worth reading or watching. Links in the comments. Thank you, #Dartmouth for making this available to all of us! #leadership #coaching #learning

Success is 100% how you respond to failure, not about avoiding it. In 2004, a tenacious, young Maria Sharapova defeated reigning tennis champion Serena Williams in shocking back to back finals at Wimbledon and the WTA Master Cups. What happened next? Serena started a winning streak against Sharapova which lasted from 2005 all the way through their last meeting in 2019. How do you view failure? I challenge you to begin viewing yourself and others not by your failures, but how you respond to the opportunity. #motivationalpost #careerdevelopmentcoaching #leadership

Roger Federer’s advice to Dartmouth graduates is nothing short of an epic masterclass on navigating life: Effortlessness is a myth. Self-belief must be earned through hard and smart work. Discipline is a talent, as are patience, self-trust, embracing the process, loving the process, and self-management. Some people are born with these talents, but everyone must work to develop them. You can work harder than you ever thought possible and still face defeat. Perfection is unattainable; continuous improvement is essential. Life is more significant than any job, title, or position. #RogerFederer #GraduationAdvice #LifeLessons #ContinuousImprovement #SelfBelief #HardWork #SmartWork Video Source: Internet || LinkedIn

“Talent isn't just a gift; it's about grit,” Roger Federer told the Dartmouth College Class of 2024 in a speech that made a lasting impression on me. His journey, filled with dedication and resilience, is a powerful reminder of what it takes to overcome challenges and keep moving forward. This message of persistence resonates deeply with our DEI mission. Like Federer’s journey, our DEI initiatives require continuous effort and perseverance. It’s okay not to have all the answers right away. What truly matters is our collective commitment and dedication to cultivating a DEI mindset that embraces #learning, #personal #growth, and the recognition of #unconscious #biases, creating a space where everyone can truly thrive. Federer’s words inspire me to believe that true success is achieved through persistent dedication. ⭐ Let’s carry his lessons as we push forward for a more #inclusive #society and #workplace!!!
