💡 Your idea alone will not raise capital. 👨💻 Stefan Sollberger is the CFO Swiss Chamber of Commerce in The Netherlands (SCCN) and the CEO of Sollberger KMU Treuhand. He has an extensive number of years of experience and expertise as a Partner, Advisor, Mentor and Investor. 🎧 English Translation: "Professional investors don't invest in ideas. First-time founders think that coming up with a good business idea is the hardest part, and that implementing the idea is easy. Nothing could be further from the truth, and for this reason alone, your idea alone will not raise capital. Many people think it would work like this: Create a business plan and send it to investors. The investors would then be convinced that this would be a great idea and give money and with this money you could then create a website etc. and of course conquer the world. Professional investors know that the difference between a successful startup and a failure is not the unique idea, but the hard work of the team in the many years following the original idea. And that's why no one invests in a business idea alone, also because the risk is/would be far too high." ⬇ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 If you can convince an investor to bet on your market, product/tech and team, there will be an investment. 🎧 English Translation: "Professional experienced investors know that the difference between a successful startup and a failure is not the unique idea, but the hard work of the team in the many years after the original idea. And that's exactly why most investors don't invest in ideas. So if your idea isn't enough, what do investors look for? What kind of progress/traction do they want to see? Of course, every investor is different, but their analysis focuses on the following three areas within which they evaluate your startup's risk/reward profile: (1) Market: Are there customers for your product? (2) Tech: Can the product be implemented? Can it be produced at a competitive cost? (3) Team: Do you and your team have the skills you need? Can you execute this idea and bring it to market better than the teams of the competition? Result: If your team can't convince, there will be no investment. 💡 Stay away from "Denglish" in presentations, use simple and direct language instead. 👨💻 Stefan Sollberger is the CFO Swiss Chamber of Commerce in The Netherlands (SCCN)and the CEO of Sollberger KMU Treuhand. He has an extensive number of years of experience and expertise as a Partner, advisor, mentor and investor. 🎧 English Translation: "Everything “Denglish” or what? A presentation is intended to explain to an investor why it is worthwhile for him to invest in a particular company. Great-sounding buzzwords, preferably in "Denglish", don't show how hip you are as a startup entrepreneur, but rather that you don't know how to express yourself clearly and comprehensibly. Many buzzwords set off alarm bells for investors. When giving presentations, you should therefore make sure that the language used in the presentation is simple and direct." 👁️🗨️ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 99 percent of professional investors won't sign such agreements this early in the investment process, and here's why... 👨💻 Stefan Sollberger is the CFO Swiss Chamber of Commerce in The Netherlands (SCCN) and the CEO of Sollberger KMU Treuhand. He has an extensive number of years of experience and expertise as a Partner, advisor, mentor and investor. 🎧 English Translation: " Don't ask investors to sign an NDA at the first meeting! It is a typical mistake that startups make when contacting investors that they immediately demand a signed non-disclosure agreement, i.e. NDA. The startup entrepreneurs are worried that the investor will steal their fantastic idea. (Thank you so much for the flowers, how kind of you....) The problem is that 99 percent of professional investors won't sign such agreements this early in the investment process. They receive hundreds of offers a year and many of them contain similar business ideas. Once you're in detailed discussions and due diligence with specific investors and share sensitive data (your family's apple strudel recipe, etc.) about your business with them, they may sign a non-disclosure agreement. But not at the first meeting. Result: Often, the further procedure fails at the first contact because the startup entrepreneur insists on an NDA and the investor does not want to sign it." ⬇ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 Even if you, as a founder, believe that the product will solve a big problem for a lot of people, that may not be true in the real world. 🎧 English Translation: "In a qualitative analysis of 287 failed startups in 2018, CB Insights identified "no need in the market" as by far the most frequently cited reason (42 percent). This shows: Even if you, as a founder, believe that the product will solve a big problem for a lot of people, that may not be true in the real world. So, the initial analysis of investors often revolves around the following questions: - Is there a real demand for the planned product? - Will enough people buy the product? - How much will they pay for it? 💡 It means much more that the entrepreneurs know what they can do, but also what they can't do, and that they communicate this convincingly. 🎧 English Translation: "How can startup entrepreneurs deal with the challenge of making a good impression on investors that signals that they are aware of the risks and can handle them? In my opinion, I would focus on the sovereignty factor. Sovereignty does not mean that startup entrepreneurs are perfect in everything they do in the context of a presentation. This is simply not possible, even if the ones presenting (it may be a little more) have experience with presentations. It means much more that the entrepreneurs know what they can do, but also what they can't do, and that they communicate this convincingly. It is therefore your job to give investors the feeling that their investment is in good hands with you or your team. This does not mean that you can do everything and have a solution for everything immediately. But it means that you are aware of what you can do and where there are still deficits, and that you can communicate this calmly. " ⬇ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 Core competencies of the company have to be located internally in your team, such as IT in a tech company, to reduce the risk of failure. 👨💻 Stefan Sollberger is the CFO Swiss Chamber of Commerce in The Netherlands (SCCN)and the CEO of Sollberger KMU Treuhand. He has an extensive number of years of experience and expertise as a Partner, advisor, mentor and investor. 🎧 English Translation: "Recently, a startup entrepreneur asked me the following: Why do companies fail and how should they be dealt with? My answer was as follows: Technology-based companies often don't work because they don't have IT people in-house. This results in costs that they cannot cover. From my point of view, the core competencies of the company have to be located internally. If this is not the case, it happens that companies fail. All of us have failed in life at some point. Anyone can fall down, but you have to get up again. No one will judge you (it's debatable) if the company fails. I think you should find a middle ground between the Swiss/German and the American way. In Europe, for example in Switzerland or Germany, you are condemned if you fail, and in America you are celebrated for it. HORSEPOWER: 99% fail here " 👁️🗨️ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 If you succeed, that progress/traction will change everything! 🎧 English Translation: "Statistics show that few startups make it all the way from an idea to a successful company. Many things can go wrong during this process. Maybe you won't be able to put together a great team. Maybe you can't build a great product. And in the idea phase (without customers), it's hard to argue that you'll attract a lot of customers later on. But progress, i.e. traction, is changing all that. Imagine a gaming app. Maybe the team didn't get investors in the idea phase because the investors didn't believe they could do it. But maybe they still managed to develop the game and put it online. If you succeed, that progress/traction will change everything. Results from real customers/users beat any prediction! " ⬇ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 One of the biggest concerns of many investors is that they will end up in a market that is too small. 🎧 English Translation: "One of the biggest concerns of many investors is that they will end up in a market that is too small. There are two different markets: 1. The market already exists: Your customers are already spending a lot of money on a similar product, it's easy to find a marketplace for it, and you can explain why you're going to take customers away from existing sellers. 2. The market is new: Potential customers don't spend money on something that solves the exact same problem, so it's hard to estimate how big the market will be. However, many startups, especially innovative ones, fall into the second category. Precisely because there is currently no similar product for which customers (can) spend money, you assume that there is a market opportunity. But how do you convince investors that there is a huge market opportunity when there is no market yet? " ⬇ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 Being a start-up entrepreneur means one thing above all: hard work. 🎧 English Translation: "Social media has distorted the image of start-ups and the minds represented there. Being a start-up entrepreneur means one thing above all: hard work. Interested parties are often blinded by the supposed start-up lifestyle. They rave about the idea of being self-employed, but then often can't bring themselves to do all the work to really do what is necessary. With a start-up rarely come quick successes, money and conveniences, but rather failures, risks and unsuccessful attempts after the famous product-market fit. So, it takes an iron will. Those who nevertheless dare to do so often need years before substantial successes come. Of course, no one can guarantee that. You have to cope with possible dry spells - otherwise you will have little joie de vivre in a start-up life or in the scene. " ⬇ Curious about how an investors mind works ? 💡 Only one in 10 start-ups will be successful, which is actually a bad starting point. 🎧 English Translation: "There are statements like these I hear: 'For me, the start-up scene is all about opportunities, innovation, personal growth and lots of cool people.' It's a community of like-minded people who support and help each other. At the same time, start-up life is an emotional rollercoaster ride every day, characterized by success, failure, euphoria and disappointment. It takes courage and flexibility to survive in this fast-paced world. Failure is of course part of the process - you always have to keep that in mind. Only one in 10 start-ups will be successful, which is actually a bad starting point. Nevertheless, we should see it as an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and develop further. Overall, the scene is a dynamic and challenging environment in which dreams can be realized if you are prepared to face the challenges. " ⬇ Curious about how an investors mind works ?
