Sweden is leading the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the steel industry. One of the country's big steel mills is replacing its blast furnace with two electric arc furnaces, resulting in a 7% reduction in Swedenยดs total emissions. Other companies are also racing to create industrial quantities of โgreenโ steel, with production estimated for 2026. On the demand side, companies like Volvo have committed to solely producing their products from fossil-free steel. This progress represents proof that itโs possible to make the transition and significantly reduce the global carbon footprint of the steel industry. In the Czech Republic, steel accounts for 7.5% of GHG emissions, and steel manufacturers ArcelorMittal Ostrava and Tลineckรฉ ลพelezรกrny are the second and third largest single emission sources in the country. SSAB With New Billion Euro Investment in Fossil-Free Steel in Northern Sweden Global steel company SSABโs Board of Directors has decided to build a new fossil-free steel mill in Luleรฅ, Northern Sweden. The investment is estimated to be a whopping EUR 4.5 billion. "The transformation of Luleรฅ is a major step on our journey to fossil-free steel production. We will remove 7 percent of Sweden's carbon dioxide emissions, strengthen our competitive position, and safeguard jobs with the most cost-effective and sustainable strip production in Europe." SSAB's President and CEO Martin Lindqvist made the statement in a press release on Tuesday. The company informs that SSAB has decided to move forward with the next step in its transition by building a state-of-the-art fossil-free steel mill in Luleรฅ, Northern Sweden. Billion-euro investment #SSAB will close the current blast furnace-based production system when the new steel mill is completed. This will reduce Sweden's #CO2 emissions with 7 percent in addition to the 3 percent from the Oxelรถsund mill conversion, writes #SSAB. The total mini-mill investment, including contingencies, is estimated to be EUR 4.5 billion (about SEK 52 billion). The company plans to fund the investment with its own cash flows and within SSAB's financial targets. The new Luleรฅ mill will have a capacity of 2.5 mton/year and will be supplied with a mix of fossil-free sponge iron from the #Hybrit plant in Gรคllivare and recycled scrap. The startup of the new mill is planned for the end of 2028, with a total capacity one year later. โTogether with our partner #LKAB, we are committing to eliminating CO2 emissions from our value chain and establishing the new benchmark technology for a fossil-free future. Swedish steel company SSAB has decided to build a modern, environmentally friendly mini-mill in Luleรฅ, Sweden. The project involves shutting down the current blast furnace-based production system. This will reduce CO2 emissions in Sweden by 7% in addition to the 3% achieved through the conversion of the Oxelosund plant. The capacity of the future production complex is estimated at 2.5 million tons of steel per year. The plant will be equipped with two electric arc furnaces, a modern finishing system, a hot rolling mill for SSABโs specialty products, and a cold rolling mill to serve automotive manufacturers. The new plant will be supplied with raw materials consisting of fossil-free sponge iron from Hybritโs demonstration plant in Gรคllivare and recycled scrap. โThe transformation of Luleรฅ is a major step on our journey to fossil-free steel production. We will remove 7% of Swedenโs carbon dioxide emissions, strengthen our competitive position and safeguard jobs with the most cost-effective and sustainable strip production in Europe,โ says SSABโs President and CEO Martin Lindqvist. The total investment in the construction of the mini-plant is estimated at โฌ4.5 billion. By doing so, the company avoids the โฌ2 billion investment that would have been required in the existing blast furnace-based production equipment over the next 10 years. The company will finance the construction with its own cash flows. The new mini-smelting plant will have a better cost position due to lower fixed costs, higher efficiency, shorter lead times and no CO2 emission costs. The new complex is scheduled to be launched in late 2028 and reach full capacity a year later. Environmental permits are expected to be obtained by the end of 2024.
