While the world was debating Barbie v Oppenheimer I noticed something interesting at PVR: You can watch 30 minutes worth of trailers at PVR for Rs. 1. There are assigned timings for the ‘trailer show’! Even if they fill 2 theatres worth of people, they might make 1000 rupees. So, why would PVR do this? 1) Get people excited about what’s coming up If I end up liking a movies trailer, I might end up going and actually watching the show 2) Cross-sell their confectioneries There’s a reason why PVR’s food business makes more money than burger king. People might end up buying a snack while they are inside. 3) Free marketing - Generate Word of Mouth The best way to promote a movie is to hype people up. If I see a kickass trailer, I might end up telling my friends about it.
