From the Cleveland Clinic: “Between 5% and 12% of the general adult population have some form of TMJ disorder. The condition is twice as common in women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) than in men and people assigned male at birth (AMAB).”
You would think that would make this a women’s health issue, right? When I called the Women’s Health Initiative to ask who is responsible for TMD research there, I was politely informed the answer was “nobody.” They are looking at cardiac conditions, osteoporosis, dementia and cancer…
But TMD’s, which women suffer immensely from, and which impact all aspects of their life- emotional, physical and financial, to name a few- are not included in this initiative!
Who do we need to contact? How can we draw attention to this huge oversight? What should we tell our patients? They deserve our advocacy, our allyship and our commitment to relieving their suffering. One meeting every couple months with lots of talking is not good enough. We need disruptive leadership and swift action!
Our patients deserve the same sense of urgency that COVID patients received. They need to be able to use the joint responsible for communicating, nourishing themselves and expressing emotions without experiencing debilitating pain.
