I was lucky to be in the presence of Niall O'Carroll at a recent event who told the great story and lessons we can learn from unlikely Olympic gold medalist Stephen Bradbury. An Australian speed skater. And luck played a big part in Stephen even getting to the final, with bodies falling in front of him in both the quarter-final and semi final he was the lowest seed in the final up against the top athletes in his discipline and the only advice he was given for the final was "Stay in your Skates" Which essentially means to focus on one's own performance and stay within one's own abilities and strategy. Here are some lessons that can be learned from Stephen Bradbury's experience with this advice: Persistence and Resilience: Sometimes, success comes to those who keep pushing forward even when the odds are against them. Preparation and Opportunity: This underlines the importance of being prepared and ready to seize opportunities when they come Never Underestimate the Underdog: Underdogs can surprise everyone with their determination and unexpected successes. Staying Calm Under Pressure: Maintaining composure during moments of chaos can lead to better decision-making and outcomes. Control the Controllable: Focus on what we can influence and not waste energy on things beyond our control. Never Give Up: Never give up on your dreams, no matter how improbable they may seem. The unpredictability of Life: Sometimes, the most unlikely events can occur, and it's important to be open to embracing unexpected opportunities and outcomes. Growth mindset vs Fixed mindset This distinction is often overlooked in both professional and personal arenas but it is an important differentiation when it comes to people’s psyches. Yesterday Bryson won his second U.S. Open championship and you could make an argument that yesterday’s champion is different than the 2020 champion despite being the same person. People can grow and change but not all people put in the work to do so. Society can be so quick to write people off or judge others but why? You hear a lot of rhetoric in society like “he will never change” or “people never change” Maybe people with fixed mindsets don’t but I would argue the people making those comments and writing people off are also people with fixed mindsets. Bryson is also one of the only players I saw fist bumping patrons walking from hole to hole in the final round of a major championship.
