The Economic Club of Grand Rapids hosted an event this week that proved engaging and insightful as usual. Mike Wall kicked off a thorough overview of his predictions for the auto industry and specifically, of battery electric vehicles. He then moderated a panel discussion with the leaders of three automotive suppliers including Christina Keller of Cascade Engineering, Jonathon Husby of ADAC Automotive, and Tobias Banik of tesa North America.   Predictions: * GDP stabilizing and demand remaining strong * Production growth improving * EV penetration growing significantly in US, Europe and China * Consumers will retain their gasoline-powered vehicles longer than in the past * Consumer electricity utility costs will increase to fund the expanded electrical infrastructure   Concerns: * Affordability and infrastructure gaps continuing to slow adoption for awhile * Inflation due to higher labor costs likely shared between consumers and manufacturers * Engineering talent drain with shift in R&D focus * Manufacturers losing scale with exploration of alternative energy-powered vehicles * Sales volume forecast uncertainty   Supplier Trends and Strategies: * More shared risk and cooperation between suppliers and OEMs concerning CAPEX and technology application. * More diversification, automation and flexible manufacturing to reduce costs and risk and to increase utilization and scalability   It is certainly an interesting time to be a leader of a company in the automotive industry today requiring wisdom, vision, collaboration, strategic thinking, risk management, change management, and so much more, amidst so much uncertainty. Change is inevitable. Time will tell which leaders successfully navigate their organizations into the future.
