I think this narrative John is trying to sell is good for engagement, but its far from reality. Otherwise, all those who had been affected by layoffs aren't working really hard? I'm not trying to offend this point of view, just trying to point that the problem of these days economy fail isn't just our fault. I work really hard 8h per day in a game company because I love my job. I do also some hours of freelancing, plus studying English because I'm not a native speaker, and add to the count some more time studying to get better at art. Sometimes it's a matter of being lucky I guess, the place you has born and how your family was able to finance your studies. As a Brazilian I'm used to see many super talented friends working for BIG game companies earning less than a MacDonald's waiter, cause we are latinos right? We don't deserve that much to live. Of course, its just 50% and the other aspects are those you say, love your job and work hard. But to summarize, its not about just working hard.
Breaking into the games industry is really hard. I think most people already know that, but I'm going to give my 2 cents on it. First of all, to break in you will need at least 2 of the 3 following qualities: 1. You LOVE video games 2. You work super hard 3. You're a genius I think most of us love video games, so that one's easy. And most of us are also not geniuses, so that leaves only one way forward. Now on top of having 2 of the 3 aforementioned qualities, you also need a little bit of luck. When I got my first Technical Artist job, I was extremely lucky. I can't go into too much detail because of confidentiality, but I was working as a Junior QA Tester and essentially the perfect opportunity landed right on my lap. The company needed a Houdini / Procedural prototype and it was right up my alley. So I got very lucky, but in a sense I had made my own luck because for the last year I had been spending a lot of my personal time working on my Houdini / Procedural skills. Since I had already refined my skills, I was able to deliver a working prototype in less than 24 hours and got promoted shortly thereafter. This is why working hard (or being a genius) is critical to breaking into games. #videogames

Look I am no Nostradamus here, okay...but Romero Games Ltd., posting open positions for a new FPS game. I think people beating Sigil 2 probably assumed that the mentioned Hellion was going to be a DOOM 2 WAD. But I consulted a team of scientists, and they are predicting that this is the new game Romero is making. Think about this - design principles similar to OG DOOM. That fast moving, enemy prioritizing, demon ridden goodness of old but new, and improved. Maybe if we are lucky, another Buckethead soundtrack. The FPS genre is no desert right now. It's booming with games and a whole new generation of pistol starting, circle strafing maniacs who are discovering not only the classics like Doom, but also their modern contemporaries - the DUSK's, Turbo Overkill's, Ion Fury's, Selaco's, Prodeus', Amid Evil's, Ultrakills, and Mullet Mad Jack's of the world. (Oh I'm sorry I can't name ALL the good FPS games from the past 10 years, LinkedIN doesn't have a two million character limit) So having one of the original king-shit's of the FPS, who is still making Doom WAD's with no super shotgun and eight thousand dickhead Cacodemons make a brand new FPS game in the time where these games have been nicknamed "boomer shooters" because 38 year olds like me are sitting and waiting for the next Eviternity or Sunlust to come out for our GZDOOM executables would be the absolute cherry on top of what I consider the new greatest era for the genre. Or I'm totally wrong and Hellion is another DOOM WAD, not that I'd be disappointed either way.
HIRING!! Romero Games has 31 job openings across various departments including Art, Code, Design, and Operations. Game Dev Journey Update: This past month has been quite the ride - full of learning, challenges, and, most importantly, fun! I'm thrilled to share that I've had the opportunity to collaborate with some fantastic individuals, Dennis Bradley and Michael Johnson, on my very first team Unity project. Together, we embarked on a journey into Unity and brought to life a simple yet engaging first-person shooter game. Our mission? To find keys and take down enemies, all to progress through the floors of our virtual world. Stepping into a team environment was a bit nerve-wracking initially, I won't lie. However, the experience has been incredibly rewarding. Not only did I deepen my understanding of Unity development and coding techniques, but I also honed my teamwork skills, mastering the art of collaboration, effective communication, and project management, thanks to tools like Git. For us, this prototype marks a significant milestone in our journey toward becoming game developers. But it's just the beginning! We're already gearing up for more exciting projects, eager to push our boundaries and refine our skills even further. Now, over to you. What are your thoughts on our prototype? Any feedback or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated! #GameDev #Unity #Teamwork #Gamedevelopment #Prototype #FeedbackWelcome

So, speaking of Unity and engines overall. During my time as a game designer, I experienced working with it, however it never clicked with me in the right way. The fact that games I want to make (not for smartphones) are usually made with Unreal Engine made it a much more desirable choice. Also, the UI, tools, documentation, infrastructure and free learning paths provided by Epic Games really helped me get hooked. And I want to continue to improve my skills with UE even further. Apparently, Unity is not doing too well business wise, with all the layoffs and recently announced "fees system", while UE has a much more developer friendly licensing program, grants, distribution platform, etc. At the same time, it's painful to see that other devs are forced to switch to UE only because of the business calls made by the software owner. I remember playing Dead Trigger and other games by MADFINGER Games, a.s., and thinking how beautiful these titles are. It was hard to imagine that one could have such impressive visuals in a mobile game. Was it powered by Unreal Engine? Nope, it was Unity. Which proves you can have great results with both engines, it just makes sense to use them effectively. Which is why, apparently, Madfinger are using UE5 for their next title, as it's intended for PC. Generally, I see it this way. Any company that chooses to use UE instead of Unity and/or their own proprietary engine puts itself on my radar. I don't want to invest time in something I won't be using anywhere else. Sure, all engines are similar in one way or another and being flexible when it comes to this is considered to be a plus. However, more and more high-profile studios switch to UE (CDPR, etc), which proves that those who will stick with alternative/own technologies might be facing some issues with personnel in the future. #unity #unity3d #unitydeveloper #unityengine #unitygames #unitydevelopment #unity3ddeveloper #unrealengine #unrealengine5 #unreal #ue #ue4 #ue5 #gamedev #gamedevelopment #gamedeveloper #gameengine

Most of the devs in game dev are because they love games. Games wont die, they will evolve. With evolution there is also a responsibility of keeping yourself updated with the new tech and tech-stacks. The problem with most of the game developers are that they stick with the engine so much that they forget what programing is. Game engines make easy for you to code games but this doesn't mean that you have to forget the concepts of architectures. Game devs aren't paid enough like full stacks because more then half have never kept their hands dirty with back end development which is a huge part of becoming a full stack dev. I am trying to share knowledge about game development, Which I already posses to my local market through discord [Link at the end] but Its open for everyone to join, to help and get helped. Also looking for people which have solid grip on programing architectures, Game design, Game art in this group. Want to make it as diverse as possible. If you want to join: https://lnkd.in/d-rpC7kP
Thinking of Switching Career from Unity? I have seen many people complaining about, they choose the wrong field, and they are not getting paid enough like other full stacked devs. Game development is difficult then App and Web development. Yes That's all true. But that's doesn't mean you should switch your career, there are lot of things you could have tried. Publish your very own Games. Create immersive experiences in AR. Work hard and start your Venture. Because Game Development is the only field in which you could do everything single handedly. So don't stop work on side hustles.. #unity #unreal #gamedevelopment #sidehustles
