Did you know that S4B scripts have additional requirements for prescribing, dispensing and prescription retention? Prescription must include an interval for repeat where repeats are ordered. Where a prescription bears no interval for repeat, it may be dispensed once only, and must then be cancelled and retained. The prescription must be retained at the pharmacy where it is first dispensed. Where repeats are ordered, the patient must return for repeat dispensing to the pharmacy at which the prescription was first dispensed. Conforming electronic prescriptions must also have an interval indicated for any repeats. If there is no interval indicated, the prescription may be dispensed once and cancelled. If there are repeats ordered and an interval indicated, the repeat token can be issued to the patient and there is no need for the repeats to be dispensed at the same pharmacy. NABP: The Evolving Path of E-Prescriptions The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) has released a blog article talking about the evolving path of e-prescriptions. Since the option to use e-prescriptions for controlled substances was provided by the DEA in 2010, a majority of states now require e-prescriptions for at least some medications. The use of e-prescribing helps to reduce the possibility of human error and allows for more efficient processing of prescriptions. According to a Surescripts national progress report, 94% of all prescriptions in the United States were electronically filed in 2021 and 92% of prescribers adopted e-prescribing methods. Seven states, including California, now mandate e-prescribing for all prescriptions (both controlled substances and non-controlled substances). A total of 35 states requires e-prescribing in some form by state law. Major benefits of e-prescribing include decreased medication errors, increased efficiency, fever forged prescriptions, and simplified prescription transfers and cancellations. Drawbacks include concerns about security and privacy lack of interoperability and the cost of system implementation and maintenance. View the NABP’s blog article here: https://lnkd.in/gT3HJfAc

If you haven’t run into this already, New Mexico BOP has a new online portal for your licensing renewal. It’s a little confusing, especially if you manage a pharmacy license or are a consultant for a hospital/clinic needing renewals of their license. Historically you could print the application, fill everything out on behalf of the client needing renewal and they would sign a check and send it in. However, now you’ll need to schedule some time with a designated person from their business to become a registered user within the online portal for license renewals. If you’re the decided upon designated user, you can email the board to add the facility license to your personal account to process the renewal. Happy to support anyone with additional questions. #licenserenewals #newmexicopharmacists #regulations/compliance
