I guarantee that if you take these steps, you'll better position yourself to find an in-house role. Law firms typically don't source candidates, but companies do. They have robust recruiting teams and the tool they use to find candidates is LinkedIn! Your LinkedIn should describe your experience using keywords for the roles you want. Review job descriptions that align with your practice and use keywords in your About section and each role you've had. This will allow you to come up in searches. In-house recruiters source from internal referrals. The best way to get a referral is to leverage your network. This includes law firm and law school alumni, family or friends, or LinkedIn connections. If your connections aren't strong, ask if they are open to talking about their company experience. Explain that you found a role you are interested in and would love to get their insight before applying. This may lead to a referral. Agency recruiters often work on in-house roles on a retained basis, so this is the one time I recommend attorneys flag with anyone who handles in-house roles that they are entertaining these options. Unlike law firm recruiters, there is no one-stop shop for in-house jobs and no agency recruiter has access to every in-house role. You can also turn on your Open to Work status on LinkedIn as it makes you easier to find. Many law firms help their attorneys transition in-house. This hasn't always been the case but firms have taken on a new philosophy. It is better to have an attorney leave to a client to help retain that client in the long run. Leverage internal resources as more attorneys move in-house to a client than a random company. The general rule of thumb is you need to have 70%+ of what is needed in the job description to be a qualified candidate. In-house roles are competitive and typically have more than enough candidates to choose from. Your resume should align with the job description. In-house recruiters are looking for keywords and if those words are missing, you are unlikely to be considered even if you have the exact experience they are looking for. If you're serious about moving in-house, employing these steps will position you to do exactly this. Are there other strategies to consider? If you are considering a move, reach out to me Summer Eberhard. ๐ฉ seberhard@laterallink.com #law #legal #biglaw #bestadvice #layoffs
