I recently celebrated 5 years at Kandji.
And, today we announced a major milestone: $100M in capital from General Catalyst as part of our Series D.
Going from employee # 4 at Kandji to where we are today - $850M valuation, thousands of customers globally, hundreds of employees, offices across the world, a valuable and ever-innovating product - has been nothing short of transformational.
Sharing some reflections and lessons learned from the last 5 years and beyond:
1. Build for scale, but don’t let that keep you from shipping early
You don’t know what will work and what won’t until you do it live. Keep scale in mind, but don’t be afraid to get an MVP of a project out there. Be intentional, but don’t spend months “in the basement” building something before any of it sees the light of day to capture learnings and make the final result even better (credit to Jaleh Rezaei and First Round Capital's Review for capturing this beautifully in their article - link in comments for an action-sparking read). We’ve made this a big focus and move a lot faster because of it, which (somewhat paradoxically) unlocks scale.
2. Being an outsider is a good thing
One of our values at Kandji is that we “focus on customers and run our own race.” From day 1, we abandoned the status quo and continue to prove that we aren’t afraid to do things differently. Personally, as someone who grew up all over the world (Portugal, Norway, Lesotho, Mozambique, Kenya - bonus points if anyone knows where Lesotho is) and didn’t move to the US until I was 17, I spent a lot of time learning how to leverage being an outsider as a core advantage. It’s easy to get swept up in what the masses are doing, but it’s standing out that will spark delight, scale, and community.
3. Reinvent yourself (and everything else)
I’ve reinvented myself as a leader & operator many times over - and have had a number of incredible mentors and leaders who have inspired me along the way. Thank you to Tim Fulkerson, Cari Jacobs-Crovetto, Mike Whitmire, Wynn White, Clark Newby, Larry Stein, Bastiaan Janmaat, Mike Dorsey, and many more for setting a great example of what leadership looks like and for all the insights you have shared with me over the years. I’ve also gotten so much inspiration from brilliant leaders through Latané Conant (she/her)'s CMO community, Dave Gerhardt's Exit Five community, John Bonini's Some Good Content community, and more (another plug for First Round Review) who have fueled me with fresh ideas for how to push the limits and stay ahead of the curve.
Grateful to be on this journey with the incredible team here at Kandji Caitlin McClenny Santa Marxen Cindy Leong Dan Miller Jon X. Daniel Scott Roberto Colecchia who have gone above and beyond to help make this milestone - and future ones - a reality.
