Job titles serve a purpose. Titles identify roles and responsibilities within an organization. Your title is what you do, not who you are. What defines you has been part of your story since birth. You are defined by things like your values, experiences, beliefs, motivators and other influences. What defines you is bigger than any title. Titles come and go. What defines you is constant. THIS IS LEADERSHIP My 16 year old has been at his new part-time job for just over a month. He works at Brave Brewing in Hastings, which is a must-do if you’re ever in these parts (and like great beer, and fat burgers). Let me tell you how owners Gemma and Matt treat their student staff. - Like the young adults they are, which means a proper job interview, proper contract, and proper rosters. - Decent pay with a starting rate that sits well above minimum wage. - Full inclusivity and respect for diversity, gender pronouns, and a “safer spaces” policy on behaviour and how the Brave community operates. - Paid staff training days. - An atmosphere that supports his learning and development (he already knows more about beer than I do). - A long list of staff perks (he can’t wait to be old enough to access the beer-related ones!) - Understanding. My son woke up with a hacking cough and runny nose this morning. He’d already asked for next Saturday off to attend an event and was nervous to call in sick because it would mean letting them down two weeks running. But when he rang, all he got was empathy and compassion. Too often, part timers are treated as a bit of a commodity. Students are viewed as cheap labour, uncommitted and probably unreliable. But give them the tools and they will rise to the challenge. This is true leadership.

The expert joiners, carpenters, and masons of our Specialist Craft Teams are helping to pass on traditional craft skills to the next generations, so that we can not only continue to look after our historic buildings, but also ensure that this hard-earned technical knowledge can be spread around the wider industry and general public. While family is important, the thing average Australians value most above all are our FRIENDS, so much so that 93% admit our FRIENDS mean the world to us. A national study into mateship commissioned by low-cost mobile service provider Amaysim reveals how highly we valued our FRIENDS. 88% said more than love, while 66% admitted FRIENDS meant more than material possessions. And while Christmas is certainly the time for giving, the secret of being the FRIEND you can be, doesn't mean just a few drinks at the pub or a chat over coffee, but actually involves your time and effort. The research which surveyed more than 1000 people found 83% valued trustworthiness in a FRIEND, while almost the same amount (82%) valued honesty and reliability (81%).
