Together with Büro Ehring and Atelier Ten, STUDIOS imagined a residential future for 1633 Broadway as part of the Metals in Construction 2023 Design Competition. “Vertical Village”, our winning submission, was praised by the jury as a “hero submission”, for its ambitious architecture and combination of creative solutions to two different typologies—office and residential—, having a bold vision amongst the supertalls of the Midtown skyline, and ultimately providing a place they’d like to call home. The new Vertical Village rethinks housing and traditional neighborhoods, and will jump start a district that is struggling to compete in the current office market. - How to provide enough light and air for residents within a monolithic boxy building? By subtracting 4 structural bays from the center of the 181’ x 260’ traditional commercial building you are left with two 75’ residential bar towers with light and air now surrounding all units. - Steel can contribute to upwards of 40% of a building’s embodied carbon footprint. A new exoskeleton braced frame is proposed to surround the new residential towers, the center of the building is then removed, and the steel is reused in the vertical expansion of the east tower. - New ‘Superfloors’ inhabit the existing building’s mechanical floors—updated to incorporate ring trusses that provide lateral bracing—to provide amenities and collective experiences for the residents including a market, coworking club, recreation/wellness, and a garden “farm-to-table” at the top most Superfloor. These shared spaces directly respond to the changes in work, life, and play that have evolved over the last five years, providing a variety of adaptable spaces. - The aluminum and glass skin of 1633 Broadway is replaced with a new unitized system suitable for 21st century residential use—providing light, air, and maximum views balanced with efficiency, cost, and energy consumption. Six types of cast GFRG panels respond to differences in solar orientation across the building’s surface, maximizing daylight and views while mitigating solar gain.
