“Knowledge is only useful if we use it, if it changes the way our students interact with the world. This is what I meant by a pedagogic curriculum. Instead of thinking about the curriculum as a list of facts that just needs to be sequenced, we have to start thinking about it in terms of concepts. How can we curate the experiences students have in a way that gets them thinking in terms of those concepts? Once you shift to that mentality, questions around sequencing become far less important.”…this is the best answer to the question I got asked: what’s the point of concept-based teaching and learning for Maths? I don’t find it useful to teach maths through a concept-based approach.

Former Headteacher / Former HMI / Primary Consultant & Trainer / Level 7 leadership coach / mentor in early years and schools. Supporting pedagogy and creative thinking.
Knowing how children learn is central to creating a purposeful curriculum. It is far deaper than a topic or theme. We must know exactly what each child needs and build experiences and opportunities from this point. If we want children to develop their early language skills - the curriculum needs to respond with endless opportunities for children to talk, question, share and modify their thinking!
